TO SELL MONEY BACK

IRELAND’S BARGAIN WITH BRITAIN HAS OWN COINAGE NOW British Official Wireless RUGBY, Wednesday. In the House of Commons to-day the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, said he had made arrangements to take back the British silver coins in the Irish Free State at their face value, up to a total of £ 750,000. Mr. Churchill said the Free State Government had at first demanded that Britain should take over at its face value all the British silver coinage, of an estimated value of between £1,500,000 and £3,000,000. He had naturally demurred, because of the cost to the British taxpayer. The Free State then pointed out that Britain had assisted South Africa and Australia by taking back the British coinage at its face value. After negotiations a compromise was reached under which Britain agreed to accept silver coin from Ireland to the value of £750,000, to be spread over a period of 10 years. He estimated that this would cost the Exchequer £500,000.
