Ponsonby’s Task
Fight For A.C.A. Championship Y.M.C.A. Entrenched
THE fight for the championship of the Auckland Cricket Association's senior A grade becomes keener every -week now, and another battle between Ponsonby and Eden promises to provide interesting fare for cricket fans at Eden Park to-morrow.
T>ON'SONBY is at present leading -*• with 21 points, with Varsity 20 points second, and Eden 19 points third. A three-point win to Eden, therefore, would place the teams level. Eden batted first last week and at stumps had 281 on for eight wieketc. G. L. Weir played a dashing innings for 81 late in the day, and may yet get his century, as it is probable that Eden will endeavour to further entrench itself before sending Ponsonby in. . . The Ponies’ policy will no doubt be to clean up the tail-enders as quickly as possible, get in and make the runs necessary for a three-pointer. It is evident, therefore, that the day will he a trial of strength for the Ponsonby batsmen. Unless some of the lesser lights come to hand (as they have a habit of doing in crises). Smith, Monteith. Taylor and McUeod will have to take the responsibility for getting the runs. Whoever wins, the match promises to be a close one—and for the sake of the game it is to be hoped it will be brighter than it was early last Saturday afternoon. Y.M.C.A.’S CHANCE With 378 on fur seven wickets, Y.M.C.A. is in an almost unassailable position for scoring a three-pointer against Parnell on No. 2 wicket. Much will depend on the start the red-caps are given by Hay and Whitelaw. Against United Suburbs at Devonport. North Shore scored 305 last Saturday the opening Suburban batsmen being still together with 9 on the board at “stumps.” It is doubtful whether Suburbs have the goods to get there after their recent performances. but at the same time anything is liable to happen. Uevel pegging was the order of the day in the Va.rsity-Grafton match last week, when the Graftonians, after an early slump, finished up with 260 to their account. The odds are slightly in the students’ favour for the concluding day to-morrow.

AUSTRALIA’S SIDE VIEWS OF THE CRITICS NECESSARY INCLUSIONS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. Mr. Clem Hill, cabling to the “Daily Telegraph,” about the Australian team for the fifth test, says: By including Wall and Fairfax the selectors have done what was absolutely necessary. They have at last recognised that it is essential to have bowlers able to take advantage of a new ball. In the last three test matches, with Hendry and Nothling as the opening bowlers at Sydney, and Hendry and A’Beckett at Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia was half defeated from the start. Wall unquestionably is Australia’s best fast bowler at the moment. No matter what Hornibrook does in the coming test match he must go to England in 3 930, for the simple reason that mi Australian team should go to England without a left-hander. Hill offers his congratulations to the selectors. in that youth at last has been recognised. Writing in the “Morning Post,’* Mr. P. F. Warner says Australia’s players for the final test match have obviously been selected in view of the future. If Australia can find a. first-class howler she will send a formidable combination to England in 1930. He thinks Ryder, has an .excellent chance of the captaincy in 3 930. The Taunton Council has decided to give a civic reception to White when he returns. The Mayor and corporation will meet him at the station and proceed in state to the largest hall in the town for a banquet.
