Said to Have Robbed Burning Houses
FIREMAN CHARGED DIAMOND RING AND CAMERA Charged with having stolen articles from burning houses during the course of his duties as a fireman, James William Stewart was remanded at the Police Court this morning to appear at Wellington on March 7. Stewart, who is 25 years of age, was said to have stolen a diamond ring and a camera A'alued at £l2 and belonging to persons unknoAvn. According to Chief-Detective Holmes, Stewart was a member of the Wellington Fire Brigade. The articles referred to had been identified as stolen from fires. In the opinion of Air. llall Skelton, Stewart had a story to tell which should prove that he was never at the fires. The man hud come up to Auckland with his wife on his annual leave and had never been before a court in his life before. Counsel asked for bail. Mr. Holmes: Thefts by firemen from burning houses are very serious. Bail was allowed in one surety or ! £IOO.
