EDUCATING THE MAORI

DIRECTOR QUITE SATISFIED (Special to THE SUN) WUAKATANE, Thursday. Visits have been paid to native schools near Rotorua and at Paroa and Poroporo by the Director of Education. Mr. T. B. Strong, and Mr. W. W. Bird, chfef inspector of primary schools. Mr. Bird was impressed by the interest of the children in practical work, such as cookery and woodwork. The two men also visited the Whakatane District High School, wher«* there is a new primary school building of the cross ventilation type, comparing very favourably with the open air type. Concentration on work, said Mr. Strong, is far easier in this cool building than in either the open air or in the ordinary schoolroom.
