DIP INTO HISTORY PROGRESS OF MARION CLUB The following interesting bit of history of the Marton J.C. is culled from the Wanganui ‘'Chronicle": *i l i® *- u ' earliest race meetings in dte Marton district was held at Upper lutaenui in 1882, when the principal event was the Upper Rangitikei Stakes, two miles, weight lost to 12st, first prize £lO, second £3, third horse save stakes. The shortest race on the programme was the Flying Stakes, six furMV SS fr *, lr - A - H. Bull was judge and Mt. R ff. Revett secretary, and the stewards were Messrs, W. Gray W Marshal], J. Northcote, J. Green J* (Clerk of course), A. Fitzher-’ ▼ Vi (ha.ndicapper), J. Hobey (starter) J. Griffin (clerk of scales). Later the club was merged into the Marton-Rangitikei Jockey Club, and raced at Marton, Major Marshall being president, and hon. secretary Mr. Jas. G YVilson (now Sir James), the late Mr. John Stevens starter, and Mr. Donald Fraser judge. In 1887 Mr. R. E. Beckett succeeded Dr. Skerman as secretary, the latter being elected chairman.
The Marton Club seceded from the amalgamation and raced at York Farm HP tiU 1901, and Rangitikei Racing Club raced at Bulls. In 1902 the club held a meeting at Wanganui while the new course at Marton Junction was being prepared, and in 1903 the first meeting was held on the present course on September 10, when the totalisator turnover for two days was £7,997 In 1919 the Rangitikei Hunt and Marton Jockey Club held a combined meeting of two days, and £41,154 was recorded at the totalisator. The record for the club was attained in September, 1920. when £38,838 was put through the totalisator for one day, and at the 1921 summer meeting £102,166 for two days. The late Mr. G. F. Bishop succeeded Mr. E. Beckett as secretary and held office till 1907, when Mr. Arthur Way was appointed in his stead, and Mr. R. E. Beckett was appointed chairman, which position they have filled with credit ever since.
The late Mr. R. Aldworth was president of the club for many a year and on his decease in 1921 Mr. R. E. Beckett was elected president. The club instituted a progressive policy, and purchased an additional 30 acres, and the new course was laid out by Mr. Alf. Hill, caretaker of Ellerslie racecourse, and the completion of the course and the erection of grandstands, jockeys’ board and necessary appointments has made the Marton Racecourse one of the foremost in the Dominion.
As soon as the motor-cars took the place of vehicular transit, the club erected 58 loose boxes with sand roll and wash down, night paddocks, etc., and also built an accommodation house capable of accommodating 67 visiting horses and their attendants.
