LEAGUE RUGBY PIONEER

DEATH OF MR. E. H. WATTS FIRST N.Z. SECRETARY A link with the pioneering days of Rugby League football in Auckland was broken this morning when the death of Mr. E. H. “Teddy” Watts, the secretary of the Auckland and New Zealand Leagues, occurred. A true sportsman in every sense of the word, and an especially staunch and untiring worker for the 13-a-side code, the late Air. Watts Avas a brother of Air. Jack Watts, the present secretary of the Northern Boxing Association and treasurer of the Auckland Cricket Association. He was one of the determined workers and pioneers who assisted in organising the Auckland Rugby League in 1909. ITe was appointed secretary and later when the New Zealand League was formed he was also appointed secretary ol that bodj'. He was in charge of the first League team which left Auckland on an extensi\ r e tour of the Dominion. On this occasion each member of the team had to put money up for the tour and assist to finance it generally. The following year., favoured Avith more funds, the Auckland League was in a position to refund this money to the players. After some years as one of the official “heads” of the game, Air. "Watts found it necessary for health reasons to sever his connection with League in j an executive capacity.
