Sir Carrick haserved with distinction the Auckland Hospital Board as an honorary surgeor. He performed active service in the wa: as a surgeon. MR. J. W. MACDONALD Mr. John William Macdonald, C.M.G has had a distinguished career in th* Public Service and now occupies the pos? of Public Trustee and chairman of the Rural Credits Board. Joining the Justice Department in 1900 he qualified for tb legal profession. In 1906 he was tranrferred to the Public Trust Office, as i clerk in its legal department. He wr appointed assistant-solicitor in 1907, a: solicitor in 1909. This position he he!; until 1917. when, on the reorganisation :: the department, he was appointed Assis’ ant Public Trustee, and a member c the newly-constitutcd board in chargee the office. Hugh Fraser Ayson, C.M.G., is Resident Commissioner and Chief Hig: Judge in the Cook Islands. He is a so: of Mr. F. L. Ayson, formerly chief inspector of fisheries. Qualifying for the barb remained in legal practice until 1916 wh?: he was made Judge of the Native Land Court, Judge, of the High Court and deputy-resident commissioner of the Cooi Islands. Two years later he returned to New Zealand as a Judge of the Nativ* Land Court. In 1922 he returned to tfe Cook Islands. AI. J. B. T HOMPSON Air. John Baird Thompson, C.8.E., wh is Under-Secretary of the Lands an« Survey Department, was born in Irelairin 1868, and joined the New Zealand Lands and Survey Department in 1891. took charge of the drainage work of th Piako Swamp in 1909 and the followin? year took over the drainage works on th* Rangitaiki Plains. In 1913 he was appointed chief drainage engineer in char?* of the drainage operations of the Land> and Survey Department throughout N'e* Zealand. In 1920 he was sent on a tour of the United States, Canada and Mexicc for the purpose of investigating and reporting upon the drainage methods followed in those countries, and to purchas machinery for drainage development i' New Zealand. In March. 1922, on th retirement of Air. T. N. Brodrick, he appointed to his present position.
