CALL FOR TARIFF

IMPORTATION OF CHEAP CLOTHING “FLOOD OF SWEATED GOODS’’ Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. The New Zealand wholesale clothing trade wants a safeguarding tariff and a deputation waited on the Manufacturers’ Federation’s Conference today, placing the position before it. Statements were made that owing to the unemployment position at Home the worst sweating conditions exist in the industry there, and the Dominion was being flooded with “sweated” goods. The deputation said that there was no intention of getting up a deputation to the Prime Minister, but they wished to co-operate with the deputation proposed by the federation. Employees of the clothing trade were arranging for a deputation early in March.

The conference decided to instruct federtaion officers to assist clothing manufacturers in presenting their case to the Prime Minister.
