OTOROHANGA SHOW
A RECORD YEAR (From Our Own Correspondent) OTOROHANGA, To-day. Favoured with glorious weather, the Otorohanga Agricultural and Pastoral Association held its sixth annual show yesterday. The attendance was excellent, the gate receipts showing a marked increase over those of last year. The horse competitions attracted record entries, the principal event, the open hunting competition for the Otorohanga Challenge Cup, being won by Mr. J. H. Johnston’s Ranger. Mr. J. C. Rolleston presented the cup. The cattle, sheep and pig sections were well represented, and the exhibits in the needlework, home industries and garden sections were of high grade quality. At the smoke concert in the evening. Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., and the Hon. 11. Atmore, Minister of Education, were present, and spoke on the subjects of land settlement and education. Mr. Atmore emphasised his belief that the education policy of New Zealand must be designed to attract boys to work on the land, direct boys into technical pursuits, provide for the commercial needs of the country, and only those fitted for none of the first-mentioned three avenues should be permitted to become members of the professions. Without production. the technical, commercial and professional classes could not live. The prize-list was as follow: HORSES Draught mare or gelding, three years or over: J. Richmond 1, H. Symonds 2.
