SEROIUS INCREASE OF CRIME IN N.S.W.
Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. A SERIOUS increase in crime throughout the State is indicated in the annual report of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mitchell. During 1928 there were 3,409 offences against property with violence, and 11,195 without violence, increases of 388 and 668 respectively. Offences against good order numbered 57,289, an increase of 4,334. The courts dealt with a total of 137,079 cases. Juvenile offences showed a serious increase. In the New South Wales Legislative Assembly yesterday the Crimes Act was amended to prescribe flogging for persons guilty of wounding with razors. Labour members strongly opposed the flogging.
