The Invercargill Trotting Club vvas favoured with fine weather for the first day of its summer fixture which opened to-day. There *as * large attendance and speculation was brisk, the machine showing an increase of £2,445, the return for the day being £13,540, compared with £11,095 for the corresponding day last year. The fields were very large, and in a number o£ die events backers were svell "ide of the mark. Only two favourites scored during the day. Wild fiingeu in the Maiden Handicap, and pair Wave in the Cup. The latter, driven by S- Edwards, won comfortably at the finish from Nelson de Oro, who also went a tine race and beat the others just as easily as the winner beat him. One oL tiie Ke y tie Oro tribe, jock Henderson's pacer looks like turning out a high-class horse. Wild Xit a. was a warm favourite for the Members’ Handicap, but J. McLennan’* promising pacer failed to get a place, and another sound first fancy in Winnie Chrysler could only finish third in the mile.
