High Court Lands Dannevirke Cup
SLOW-RUN RACE VAST ACRE BEATS DOBBIN (Special to THE SIX) DANNEVIRKE, Wed. ! For an autumn meeting, to-day at i Dannevirke was one of surprises. { Favourites had a lean time and form j did not AA-ork out as Avell as it might !be expected to at this time of the year. Nevertheless the totalisator handled £13,939, against £11,475, an increase of £2,464. High-Weight Handicap Big money came solidly for Novar in the High-Weight Handicap, but the old felloAv was unable to pull his backers through. Asleep went out to make the pace from Braeman and Panorama, with Break o’ Day and Novar together in behind. Going along the back Braeman ranged alongside Asleep, Avhile Panorama and Break o’ Day also moved forward, the favourite dropping back. Asleep and Braeman Avere still on terms at the straight entrance, but the former then retired, Break o’ Day hitting the front. Twenty yards from home Braeman responded to pressure, and promised to be the Avinner, but Break o’ Day held the challnge off, to Avin by a head, there being a gap of two lengths to Birkbeek. Panorama AA’as fourth, AA’ith Novar next to finish.
Maiden Plate As AA’as generally expected Propaganda (£459) AA’as installed favourite for the Maiden Plate, although there Avas good support for SnoAvshoe (£305). St. Melba, from the inside position at the barrier, Avas first out, but Avas immediately joined by Propaganda, Snowshoe and Streamer. Tenure and Waiorua joined Propaganda, and Streamer crossing the top, and the quartette turned for home just ahead of SnoAvshoe. A great struggle ensued in the run to the post, the favourite being required to do his best to hold off SnoAvshoe, AA'hile right on the post Malahat came from the ruck with a great finishing effort, but just failed by a head to catch Propaganda. Snowshoe Avas third a neck back. Blackpool AA’as fourth, with Streamer ahead of St. Melba, Gold Medal and Skill. Propaganda looked well and avill do better yet. SnoAvshoe had e\'ery chance. Dannevirke Cup The Saagll and Anolo Avere Avith - draAvn from the Dannevirke Cup at 11.20 a.m., and another scratching AA’as Kilmezzo. Locarno Avas a good fa- \ r ourite. Passing through the straight Royal Lineage Avas clear of Briar Root, with High Court on terms Avith Locarno, and they raced in that order into the back, Avhere it AA r as e\'ident that the saddle on the pacemaker had slipped forAvard on to his shoulders. Half a mile from home Locarno and Briar Root moved up to the leader, but Royal Lineage again went aAvay to lead the other pair into the straight, High Court, King 'Willonyx and Roavley being handy. At the distance Locarno was in front, but over the final pinch High Court finished the strongest and dreAA r clear, to win by a length and a-half, with a similar distance betAA r een the faA’ourite and Gaze, Avho got up in time to take third honours from Briar Root. King Willonyx Avas fourth, Avith RoAA-ley next.
Tli.e race Avas not solidly run, taking as long as the High-Weight Handicap, and this upset calculations.
Tahoraite Hack
After being - expected for some time Delude scored in the Tahoraite Handicap, in which he paid a good price. Imperial Fame jumped out at the barrier rise to pilot Boundary, Volplane, Archeria and Motliplane along the back, but crossing the top Archeria and Delude moved forward, the latter being first to straighten out for home, with Imperial Fame ahead of Tunbridge and Motliplane, the favourite being badly placed on the rails. In the .run to the judge’s box Delude, and Motliplane had the finish to themselves, but Delude held off the unlucky Warplane filly to win by a length. Tunbridge was a similar distance back in third berth, with Archeria ahead of Repay and Imperial Fame. The winner had shown promise of getting on the winning list for some time, but had raced somewhat unluckily. Repay should be better lor her race, and so should Desert Lad and Kiriana. No excuse can be offered for Archeria. The Nursery Only five runners went to the post in the Rakaiatai Nursery Handicap, My Own, Ben Hur, Lady Day and Catilex having been withdrawn. Glasslough £284, wound up favourite from Te Awa £247, and San Quex £240, but backers of the favourite were never flattered at any stage of the journey. San Quex was first out at the lift of the tapes from Te Awha and Glasslough, but the first-named pair were clear crossing the top, and once landed in the straight they drew right away. Over the last pinch Te Awha revealed a great turn of speed and ran clear away from San Quex, there being a three-length margin at the post, with another gap of six lengths to Gay Virginia. Killogie was fourth, with the favourite last. The winner is one of the Lord Quex family, from Makere, and had been doing well in private, according to Hastings enthusiasts. For such a small field he paid quite a good dividend. Oringi Hack In the Oringi Hack Handicap Australis, £372, was but a slightly better favourite than Warfille £370, with Sylvan Dell £2BB, next in demand. A ragged despatch saw Shortly, Monetize and Tutira badly left, Merry Mixture and Patearoa showing the way to Australis, Austerity and Sylvan Dell to the turn and acres the top, the sole change being that Sylvan Dell had worked in behind the two leaders, while Shortly had also made up a large measure of his leeway. Patearoa was in the van insjde the distance, but Sylvan Dell came again to get up and win by a head from Patearoa, with Shortly two lengths back. Warfille was fourth, with Merry Mixture, Tutira and Australis next. Sylvan Dell did well to win, as she ■was chopped out in the straight. She is by Lord Quex from Merry Dale, and therefore is a half sister to Wassail, who was a galloper above the ordinary before he was sold to go to Australia. Australis and Warfille were disappointing, but Warfille was going strongly at the finish. Patearoa ran his best race to date and Shortly did well over the last few furlongs. President’s Handicap Heavy scratchings took a deal of the interest out of the President's Handicap, The times of some of the scratchings were Bonogne 11.20 a.m., King Willonyx 3.55 on February 26, Vigilance, 11.20 on February 25, Borsalene, 2.45 on February 26, Queen’s Choice, 11.45 on February 25. Vast Acre, a short-priced favourite, jumped away from the barrier smartly and led Willow Wai, Plimmerton and Dobbin past the four furlongs post. Dobbin worked into second berth crossing the
top and once landed into the straight lodged a challenge, but the favouriteheld her position to win by a length, Plimmerton and Tanagra crossing the line on terms, four lengths back. Makirikiri Handicap Disrank and Topere were well backed favourites for the Makirikiri Hack Handicap. They were soon together in front of the field and led to the straight from a bunched field, with Kilorel at the tail of the bunch. In the run down the straight Disrank always held the upper hand, but he had to be kept going to win by half a length from Kilorel, who ran on well and cut Topere out of second place by a head. Red Fuschia, who covered more ground than anything in the race, was a good fourth. Following are the results: High-weight Handicap, of £100; 1} miles. —3 Break o’ Day, 9.0, A.
