ON THE GREEN Bowls and Bowlers

By "

“Jack High.”

Duncan Campbell has won the championship of the Auckland Club, the runner-up being iL> r. P. Moir. T<» win t i :s event in s-> prominent a club as the parent, club of Auckland can be : garded _s highly meritorious. Indeed. there is a solid front of players ci the beat order to meet the aspirants fur this supreme honour. Duncan Campbell, however, cannot be regarded a junior player. He has figured prominently as the lead in many imP t int tournaments and has won the Anzic Cup—which is a front rank club competition.

The winner of this event for the last three years has been the redoubthable M. Walken —the hero o£ many competitions. Four years ago F. J. Scautlebury annexed the honour, and the year previous to that the veteran Gregory Osmond was the champion of the club. The Auckland Club has among its members quite a number of strong juung players and it was Walker’s fate this season to meet with defeat at the hands of two of these budding players. His first defeat, which was decisive, came at the hands of P. Aldred, and the second, which eliminated him from the competition for the season, came from Dr. Keith Macky, proving. of course, that the old players have to watch the..r laurels where the younger school is concerned. Macky can be credited with giving one of the b®st expositions of the game that has been seen for some time past.

Dr. P. Moir. the runner-up for the championship this year, is a bowler who has evidenced splendid form this* season. lie, similarly, reached the final stages of the competition coin* two years ago, when he was defeated tor the culminating honours by Walker Dr. Moir will be remembered as the champion of many seasons in ..he Dominion Road Club.

The St. Heliers Club is holding a social evening to-night, celebrating the club's victory in the Christmas tournament, when the team, Crawshaw. Koefoed. White and Wright, brought the champion banner of the Auckland Centre to the St. Heliers Club for the tirst occasion. Members of the Auckland Bowling Centre executive will h* in attendance, including Mr. S. Coldicutt, the president.

The final gam© in the championship of the Dominion Road Club will be played this afternoon between W. Benson and Walter Denison. Both these players have been champions of the club on previous occasions. • * *

The Mount Eden Club’s recent announcement that their property on the Mount Eden Road is for sale again marks the growth of bowling club development on the larger scale. For some time past the club has been somewhat hampered for playing space, and many propositions were tabled for consideration. Among them was a suggestion to acquire another area which would be used in conjunction with the present property. However, the new area on Epsom Avenue will give the club all the elbow room it requires, including, if necessary, three full-sized greens. The importance of the larger areas now being favoured by many clubs in preference to forming furthex* clubs is that open rinks tournaments can be conducted with ease. One-day tournaments have found much favoui' of recent years and rightly so. for they form splendid bowling trials where teams from neighbouring clubs can enter and test their strength against one another. Of late years these tournaments have been freely patronised wherever they have been conducted. The Mount Eden Club is to be congratulated on its forward move.

The Centre’s annual pairs tournament was commenced and coxnpleted last week under ideal weather conditions. and proved a great success. The play in the various sections was on the whole very evenly balanced and some very close lights ensued. Richmond (Epsom) played up to his usual form in the A section, but was not strong enough to beat Harrison and Vella (Onehunga). The latter, who is Onehunga’s popular secretary, is to be congratulated on his win in this section.

Brake, of Takapuna, is usually to be found well up in recent tournaments, and it was not surprising that he won the D section, for the Takapuna player has done well over a number of years.

In the C section, Jenkin and Mcßeath (Epsom) won. Mcßeath will be recalled as being the winner of the Dublin Service tournament this season. He ?s a recent arrival from Dunedin, and figured as number two in Inglis’s team, which did so well in the Christmas tournament just concluded. He is a bowler who is certainly taking a front rank place in Auckland.^

Although the E section can be regarded as the hardest in the tournament. it. was almost to be expected that the pair, I. Clarke and Bremner, of West End. would come out the winners. This they did after many splendid games with all wins to their credit However, they were eliminated by Parsons. the ultimate w’inner of the tournament.

Both Casey, of Carlton, and Steele, of Auckland, are to be commended for their play.

Sykes and Pearce, of Otahuhu, are due for a measure of praise. The small club that they represented has been knocking at the door of a number of tournaments this season and in this event they worthily upheld the growing reputation. * • *

Loram (Rocky Nook), although meeting with wholesale defeat at the hands of Parsons, the ultimate winner, did generally well in the tournament. This young player can be considered a coming factor in bowling in Auckland. for, indeed, in the last three tournaments that he has entered he has always been somewhere within striking distance of honours, his wonderful driving being a particularly strong feature of his work

Delamore and Vivian (Mount Eden) came out the winners in the I section. They played good bowls, while the Glen Eden repx*esentation supplied some new faces in tournament play in the city. Both pairs made creditable performances.

The .1 section winners were a strong pair in Bird and Dutfin, of Carlton. They found little difhculty in winning their section.

The intersection games revealed some excellent play. Clarke and Bremner. the winners of the same event la at season, who had met with no defeats until this stage, fell to E. F. Jones and Parsons somewhat more readily than was expected. It was the steady drawing of the latter that provided the element of victory to the Ponsonbv pair

The final game was a very close finish. the score being only three the difference Coutts and Jones were evenly matched. Coutts has been long recognised as a forefront player, while Jones deserves every credit for his win, especially as it is/ his first year in the Ponsonby Club. Bail has always figured as three with the famous Carlton rink team —Clarkson. Coutts, Kail, Trusoott. That he was able to c ome out the runner-up in this event against p xch formidable opposition again proves his sterling worth as a bowler.

I his \s not the first occasion that i arsons has won th** Centre pairs tournament. The last time he annexed it

was some four years ago, when he had Harkins, one of Ponsonby’s best leads, with him. The victory adds another scalp to this player's amazingly long list of notable wins. It is certainly gratifying thsx the veteran hero of numerous fights can again display his old form, especially as it is some time since he figured in tlie final of big events.

The final postponed round of the pennant inter-club competition will be played on Saturday next. Unless Helensville loses their two games it is almost certain that this country club will win the A section. In the B section the results should be watched with great interest. The leaders (Mount Eden) have to a very hard club in Rocky Nook, while the Dominion Road club is placed against Rawhiti, which should not prove a difficult proposition. Otahuhu. who lost the premier position, may yet come back into form in this round. The result of this section is in the melting pot until the last bowl is played on Saturday.

The championship of the Devonport Bowling Club was set down for decision on Saturday, but owing to illness of Mr. H. Bayly, who was matched with Mr. F. J. H. Ellisdon, it had to be postponed. Probably next Saturday will see it finished. The runner-up was Mr. F. Snoad, who seemed, with two lives, to have the best possible chance of figuring in the final. However, he lost one good life, much to the despair of his supporters and his own disappointment: his bad luck was to some extent explained when he was sent to bed with an attack of pleurisy after the determining game.

The club’s other championships competitions are well forward. In the Handi-

i ap Pairs, the sixth round finds Stewart, McLeod, Bartley and Melville battling for inclusion in the last round. The Champion Pairs, also sixth round, is confined to Ellisdon. Levy, Elvy, Snoad and Anderson. The two-year champions will

emerge from Foefoed, Scotland, Flinn and Davies. Two rounds have been played. The handicap singles, which is to be finished in seven series, is now confined to Melville. Anderson. Ellisdon and Coleman. The greens have shown very, evident signs of wear, and the hot spell will aggravate the conditions of the sward, making fine play in the finals almost impossible.
