£SO For a Snapshot

MILFORD GIRL’S GOOD LUCK The Sun s Photographic Competition T«o-l>.\\ The Sun announces the results of its photographic competition organised last year for the purpose of stimulating interest in amateur photography. Special cameras were supplied by The Sun, and these have undoubtedly shown that, in skilful hands, they could produce artistic results. Hundreds of entries were received from all parts of New Zealand, and great difficultv was experienced in deciding which of the competitors should participate in the prize-money amounting to £9O.

THE judges were: Mr. George Henntng, president of the Auckland Camera Club; Mr. Frank Stewart, photographic editor, The Sun; and Mr. J. C. Holland, a selector of the Interprovincial Photographic Competition. The following are the awards: FIRST PRIZE (£SO). MISS I. BLACKWELL, 10 Audrey Street, Milford. Auckland. SECOND PRIZE (£2O). MR. WILFRED G. BAYLISS, 43 Gibbon Street, Waltham, Christchurch. THIRD PRIZE (£10). MISS M. SCHOFIELD. Sheehan Street, Ponsonby, Auckland. Consolation Prizes (£1 each).-—Miss Ailsa Stuart, Queen Street. Cambridge; Miss Jean TVebb. Asquith Avenue. Mount Albert. Auckland: Mrs. S. Goble, S Mount Pleasant Road. Auckland: Miss Margaret Ilorley, 25 Rathbone Street. AVhangarei; Mr. S. Mitchell. 313 Page's Road, Avonslde,

Christchurch; Miss Marie Malloy, 6 Hamilton Street, Addington, Christchurch; Master Tom Lindley, 14 Wainoni Road, Christchurch; Miss D. Peat, Hills Road, Avoca Valley, Christchurch; Mr. R. F. Allen, 90 Salisbury Street, Christchurch; Mr. Frank R. Lamb, Sumner Street, Spreydon, Christchurch.

of the picture. The point kept constantly in the mind of the judges -was the amount of use made of the capabilities of the camera.

In their comments on the winning pictures, the judges said that Miss Blackwell’s study is a charming effort, snapped unconsciously. This competitor submitted three snaps, each of which showed consistent workmanship. There has been difficulty in selecting the best.

It was specified in the announcements of the competition that no competitor should send in more than three prints, and those who ignored this condition, sending in a greater number, were eliminated by the judges, they being of opinion that such competitors would have an unfair advantage. The judges report that many photo graphs of original poses and striking composition have been received, but that the photographs were judged purely from a technical photographic point of view. Many good subjects were spoilt through the pictures being taken off the horizontal. A number were also spoilt through faulty composition, bald sky occupying a third

The picture with which Mr. Bayliss w r on the second prize is a soft study with pleasant reflections, giving splendid depth. Miss Schofield has specialised in portraits, and her winning picture is a fine domestic study. Among the consolation prizes were many examples of good work, but there was a tendency toward the taking of stunt pictures in preference to genuine photographic subjects. Another fault was the taking of landj scape subjects in panel instead of I horizontal form. Nevertheless, the 1 work as a whole was satisfactory.
