S.P.C.A. CONFERENCE

STEER-RIDING BAN WANTED BONELESS-VEAL REGULATIONS Press Association WANGANUI, Wednesday. The annual conference of the New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held to-day. Delegates from all over New Zealand were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers. It was decided that a resolution be forwarded to the Government in connecton with the boneless veal traffic, that more stringent regulations were held to be necessary. It was resolved to approach show societies with the object of having steer-riding and buck-jumping contests prohibited and that the Government be asked to legislate so that stock in transit be exposed to the least possible risk of injury. Other remits adopted were:—That as delay in milking causes needless suffering to cows in milk at shows, agricultural and pastoral societies that do not have a clause in their schedules be urged to adopt a uniform hour at which such animals be milked, say 7 a.m.; and that it be compulsory to prevent the growth of horns on cattle other than those used for stud purposes.

A proposal to federate all tlie Jsew Zealand societies was discussed, and it was decided to hold the matter* over until next year.
