METHODIST MISSION WORK SPECIAL 1929 APPEAL / “We should nut mince mutters, for *vts have heard that the expenditure in foreign fields has been £ 1.50(1 less than last year, ’ said the Rev. J. F. Goldie president of the New Zealand Methodist Church Conference, at this morning's session. / The occasion was the consideration r>£ the Board of Missions report for 1928. dealing with the church missions ]» the Western Solomons. The report presented by the Rev. W. A. Sinclair. general secretary, i-howed that the Solomons natives had raised £ 6,000 among themselves for the fund. A few years ago they were cannibals. The total income amounted to £17.000. but there was a debit balance of nearly £ 4,000. Against this there were valuable credits in other funds, including £2,000 for the Helena Goldie Hospital. The year 1929 was to be a special missionary year throughout the Dominion, and an appeal was being made for £20.000 toward the medical and pioneering work to be carried out jn the Western Solomons. The Rev. Air. Goldie paid a glowing tribute to the work in the Solomons of Dr. “Ted" Sayers, the church’s medical missionary, who was labouring nobly and unselfishly for afflicted natives. The Rev. A. Cropp had also worked with remarkable zeal, and had not taken a holiday for seven years, so great was his interest in the work. The conditions under whfich the missionaries were living were not satisfactory. continued the president. They were not complaining, but the church should know. In some cases the missionaries were faced with the necessity of building their own houses, on their return from New Zealand. . A resolution pledging the church to the support of this year’s appeal “with Aacrificial liberality. ’’ and assuring the support of the conference, was passed Unanimously. “LB-
