SYDNEY CRICKETER’S JOURNEY PROMINENT AS ATHLETE Or. R. H. Bettington, who has established a reputation as a cricketer for New South Wales and Australia, arrived by the Maunganui this morning. He i$ to be married in New Zealand. On April 11 Dr. Bettington is to jnarry Miss Marion Lowry, at Okawa. Hawke'* Bay. and so will form another link to what is undoubtedly Xev. Zealand's most prominent sporting family- A sister to Dr. Bettington'V fiancee. Miss Gertrud© Dowry, married the captain of the English cricket team now in Australia, A. P. F. Chapman The three sons of Mr. T. IT. Dowrv who is a well-known figure in racing have all been prominent n athletics On the Maunganui this morning with Dr. Dettington was Mr. J. X. Lowrv who won his tennis “blue” at Cambridge University. Mr. Dowry was also captain of a Cambridge-Oxford tennis team which toured America several years ago.

Mr. T. C. Dowry, who captained the Wellington cricket team which recently defeated Auckland, was captain of the Cambridge cricket team and Also played for Somerset. He is now fanning with his brother, Mr. Ralph H. Lowry, near Taihape. Mi-. Ralph Lowry won his Rugby “blue” at Cambridge. RUGBY FULL-BACK Dr. Bettington was educated at Oxford. where he was prominent as a Rugby full-back. In the United Kingdom. he had a reputation for his long drive at golf. During the English team's present tour of Australia, he played for an Australian eleven against the visitors. Dr. Bettington is a particularly capable bowler. Passengers on the Maunganui did not let Dr. Bettington rest on the trip to New Zealand. He captained the victorious side in deck 'test” cricket. This morning, a popular exhibit on the vessel was the bottle containing ashes equally as mythical as those which make Englishmen and Australians so serious. The Maunganui’s ashes were in a commonplace soda-water bottle. Er. Bettington, who is to live in Sydney after his marriage, is a specialist in diseases of the throat, the ear and the nose.
