MAYOR’S HONORARIUM

INCREASE OPPOSED AT ONEHUNGA "After two years’ experience as Mayor I have reached the conclusion that the honorarium of £l5O a year is inadequate,” said Mr. W. C. Coldicutt at last evening’s meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council. He moved that in future the honorarium be increased to £2OO a : ear. He considered that it was his duty as outgoing Mayor to consider his successor in office and make it possible for him to fill the position in a proper manner. Councillor Moor was of the opinion that if the motion were carried it would amount to an invitation to all and sundry to bleed the Mayor still further. The honorarium, he said. was never meant to be used as a benevolent fund. Councillor F. S. Morton was .ot prepared to vote away the ratepayers’ money while so many of them were hard pushed to pay their rates. It was not fair that any Mayor should be turned into a charitable institution. Councillor H. A. Stoup, speaking as a candidate for the n•• mayoralty, opposed any increase in the 'honorarium in view of the distress at present existing. Councillor R. G. Speight paid a tribute the the liberality of the Mayor and Mayoress, neither of whom had ever complained. On the motion being put it was supported by the Mavor alone.
