PAGEANT OF ST. JOAN
CEREMONY IN LORRAINE 500TH ANNIVERSARY Times Cable. LONDON, Monday. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” says a prolonged commemoration of Saint Joan of Arc’s 500th anniversary began to-day at Vaucouleurs, Lorraine, the village whence began her historic journey to Cliinon in order to meet the Dauphin. The village was gaily decorated and filled with delegations from every part of France. In fine, frosty weather the air resounded with bells from every church tower in Lorraine as the procession wended its way to the stone gateway on the hill outside the village to which Joan and her companions rode. Tlie procession halted at the chapel in which Joan prayed, also at the old lime tree where, according to tradition, Joan heard supernatural voices. Tho Bishop of Verdun unveiled a tablet at the gateway. He told of Joan’s 11 days’ ride astride a farm horse though she had not ridden a horse before. He added that .loan remains a symbol of France's fortitTide.
