HOPELESS FIGHT

’ GLEN EDEN FAILS HARBOUR BOARD UNRUFFLED When Glen Eden went on to No. 1 1 wicket to attempt to make a good showing against Harbour Board’s y enormous first innings tally of 449, it .t must have known that its task was hopeless. In any case, in its two efforts at the wickets on Saturday afternoon, Glen Eden failed badly. Some of the batsmen failed utterly, and simplv could not do anything with Harbour Board’s bowling. Glen Eden scored 108 in the first innings, of which total Shepherd hit away strenuously for a useful 27. Kerr scored 20, McNeill 17, and J. Belsham 13, otherwise the innings was not very encouraging. The second innings was much poorer. After Morman had spent a good deal of his time in scoring 23 in careful fashion, and Shepherd had knocked up 12, the other batsmen scored spasmodically, and the innings closed for 88. Dunning was Harbour Board’s chief trundler. He baffled the Edeners hopelessly, and his four wickets cost j only seven runs. For senior cricket, J] | this was a remarkable average. Tur-

ner took tour wickets for 27 runs in the first innings, and three for 22 in the second. In two innings, Glen Eden scored 255 less than Harbour Board scored in one period at the wickets. It was very easy for the Board. Details: HARBOUR BOARD Fii-st Innings—Total for 9 wickets.. 449 j GLEN EDEN First Innings. With 291 to better in its first innings against Ponsonby on Saturday, Victoria started the day with poor hitting. The seventh, eighth and ninth wickets were the only bright spots on the card. Up to this point, Kdmonds, one of the openers, was the only one to reach double figures. The last two wickets fell for two. In the follow-on the team showed more enthusiasm, and the total for the two innings passed Ponies’ first innings total by one. Ponsonby has won this third match of the second series by 10 wickets. McFarlane made 20 in the first innings and 19 in the second, in steady play. Edmonds played confidently for 14 until he ran himself out, but in the second turn distinguished himself with the top score of 45. Viscoe and Manly excelled their first innings strikes when each managed a forceful and confident 39 in the second. A new senior grader. Peters, played a variety of good strokes. He was dangerous to the leg side, and had three fielders opposing him there. Promoted from second grade, Peters shows good promise; 16 not out in the first hit was a laudable effort, and he seemed set for plenty* more. He was unlucky to be skittled so soon in his second attempt. There was a short tail after another good score in the second innings, three men adding only two runs. Of the bowlers for Ponsonby. Spicer and Barnes were reliable in the first innings, and Barnes upheld his reputation in the second. Two consecutive averages of four for 26 and three for 50 showed good bowling ability b\ Barnes. Spicer was less successfu later in the afternoon. Ponsonby retains its positiun ol second in the competition, as a resull

of its good attacking: on Saturday. Nine men used the ball in tne second innings, and Blair and Fletcher did well.
