Aussie and Limerick May Meet in Ormond Cup
It is interesting to learn that there is another chance of Limerick and Aussie clashing. The race that may bring this about is the Ormond Cup, to be run at Hastings on April 20.
There are very many people who are not yet satisfied that Aussie is a better horse than Limerick, despite the fact that his victory over the Limond gelding last Saturday week was clear-cut and decisive. The time was slow, certainly, but it was about half a second faster than the hacks took earlier in the same afternoon. A gale of wind was stated to have been mainly responsible for the slow times registered that day in all races. The Ormond Cup is a race run at weiglit-for-age, with penalties, and the distance is one mile. ' The course at Hastings is a good one for such a contest, the only drawback being that the barrier is situated on a turn, about half a furlong past the winning post. It is Mr. George Paul’s intention to enter Aussie for this event, which is run on the second day of the autumn meeting, April 19 and 20. On the opening day there is the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, 61 furlongs, but Aussie was not nominated for this classic. Last season the Ormond Cup was worth not more than £355 all told, the owner of the winner (Hynanna) receiving £195 and a £IOO gold cup. The correct title of the race is the J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup, and was instituted only a few seasons ago in honour of that great sportsman and legislator, the lion. J. D. Ormond, whose all cerise colours were always popular on racecourses. What Of Limerick? Present intentions are that Limerick will sail for Sydney on Fridas’ - next, and will race at the big A.J.C. carnival on March 30, Apri 1, 3 and 6. Even if he races on the concluding day at Randwick he would be back in the Dominion on April 16, or if he missed tlie final day he would be here a week earlier. It is more than likely that Mr. H. A. Knight will be only too pleased to have another tilt at Aussie, and Hastings appears to be the only convincing ground offering. Aussie has returned home none the worse for his trip to Wingatui. One thing, if this pair do meet again, Limerick will be in tip-top racing condition. This was held to be against him in the Hazlett Memoral at Wingatui, for Aussie had been racing through the season. Previous Match Recalled In the event of Aussie and Limerick meeting at Hastings in the near future, this would not be the first time the Ormond Cup lias develoxied practically into a match. There was the famous contest a few seasons back, in which 'Gloaming downed The Hawk. There were other horses engaged, but their owners wisely decided to leave it to the two cracks. Gloaming won that race rather comfortably, although for over seven furlongs The Hawk had him doing his best. It was upon this occasion that Gloaming’s backers obFRANKLIN FIXTURE ON SATURDAY WEEK THE HANDICAPS The following weights have been de- • dared by Mr. F, J. tained, for the first time for many seasons, a deeent dividend. The scenes at Hastings on that Saturday afternoon were memorable. A crowd estimated at 40,000 packed the enclosures, and the stand accommodation proved hopelessly inadequate. With, an ounce of luck the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club should be in a position to stage another match race on April 20. Aussie will be there, all going well, and the Hawke’s Bay executive will no doubt get busy and endeavour to arrange for the presence of Limerick. Aussie's Engagements It is likely that Aussie’s next race will be in the All Aged Stakes at Avondale on April 0. In this event he will carry the full penalty, and so too will the speedy Paganelli. If these two meet once more it will be a titbit for Auckland sportsmen. This race should also serve an excellent purpose in tuning Aussie up for his second meeting with Limerick.
It was fortunate that fine weather and a drj’’ track prevailed at Wingatui, for under wet conditions it is very probable that Aussie would have been beaten, for he is not regarded as anything like a champion in mud. On the other hand, Limerick is equally at home under either conditions.
