RICHMOND CRUISING CLUB

ANNUAL REGATTA BUSY SCENE AT PONSONBY Conditions* could not have been betler on Saturday when the Richmond <’ruising Club held its annual regatta. The fixture was an outstanding sue-t-ess, the fields of starters being very good. The upper harbour was dotted with scores of small yachts and mullet boats. In the early afternoon the wind was light from the sou-’sou’-west, but later it freshened and came down more from the west.

Mr. J. Donald, president, placed his launch Marion D. at the disposal of the club as flagship, and events were started and finished off the launch, which was moored north of Ponsonby Wharf.

The offlicals were: Starter and judge. Mr. J. Longbottom; timekeepers, Messrs. W. J. Baillie, I. Dennes, P. Fahey; recorder. Mr. G. E. Day cock. s DETAILS OF RACING H Class.—Spray led the way over the line with Celox, Starlight, Starloch, Awatere and Awahou all near by. Why Not was two minutes late. Spray, Starlight and Starloch all fought a close contest all the way round the course. Finishing times were: Starlight (scr), 4.38.55; Spray tom), 4.39.14; Starloch *scr), 4.39.27; Celox (lm), 4.40.59; Awatere (4m), 4.45.15: Why Not (10m), 4.49.48; Awahou (12m), 4.53.58. Result: Spray, 1; Starlight, 2; Starloch. 3.

L Class.—A ragged start was run in this event. Mowai was the only punctual boat. Some seconds later came Kokiri, Valeria, Otira, Marie, Rakoa and Waima. Marere was l&m late.

Finishing times were: Rakoa (scr), 4.44.24; Marie dim), 4.44.49; Valeria (scr), 4.47.57; Kokiri (4m), 4.49.11; Otira (8m), 4.51.0; Waima (12m), 4-53.9. Marere and Mowai withdrew. Result; Waima, 1; Otira, 2; Marie, 3.

N Class.—There was a field of five, which got away in the following order:— Wyoming, Winifred, Wairere. Matariki and Kathleen.

Finishing times were: Winifred (scr), 1.47.34; Wairere dim), 4.52.55; Matariki (8m), 4.57.45; Wyoming (Sm), 5.0.58. Marere did not finish.

Result: Winifred, 1; Matariki, 2; Waive re, 3. V Class.—The order of crossing was: Ngaire, Sun, Surprise, Drone, Leverett, Wild Wave, Secret, Rita and Scud, all being fairly close. Mystic was Sim late. Surprise soon assumed the lead and was never headed.

Finishing times were: Surprise (2m), 4.16.55; Drone (scr) 4.19.36; Wild Wave (,4m), 4.22.19; Secret (3m), 4.22.48; Leveret (12m), 4.25.8; Mystic (sm), 4.29.15; Stud (11m), 4.29.58; Ngaire (14m), 4.33.12; Sun (11m), 4.35.37; Rita (14m), -1.38.34. Result: Leveret, 1; Surprise, 2; Wild Wave, 3.

S Class. —A splendid field of 12 lined up for the start of the 16-footers. The order of the crossing tvas: Atangatai, Surprise. Waitui, Almira. Nantu, Lancia, Cvclone, Phoebe Aratu and Sea Sleigh. Pitvllis was 2im late and Tulip 4m. T and X Classes.—Shalimar was first to respond to gunfire and was followed closely* by Ramona, Meteor, Rangi. Eleanor and Manu. A short distance away were Janet. Ola 111., Sheila and Tamure. Finishing times were: Shalimar, 4.35.40; Eleanor. 4.37.45; Ramona, 4.41.49; Meteor, 4.43.35; Janet, 4.44.56; Manu, 4.45.59; Tamure, 4.52.43; Rangi, 4.52.48. Result: Eleanor, 1; Manu, 2; Shalimar,

* V Class. —A flotilla of 11 started in the event for 14ft. square-bilge boats. The order of starting: was: Jupiter, Fay. Sea Kin?, Sea Dawn, Oreti, Romp, Opah, M.itariki, Caprice 11., Bronzewiiig and Sea Bubble. Finishing times were: Opah, 4.08.ju; Sea Dawn, 4.42.50; Fay, 4.40.24; Romp, 4.50.52; Bronzewing. 4.51.56; Sea King, 4.52.6-; Oreti. 4.52.20; Matariki, 4.04.2; Caprice, 11., 4.57. Result: Sea Dawn, 1; Opah. Caprice 11.. 5. SQUADRON RACE ALEXANDER CUP EVENT IDA WINS IN LIGHT BREEZE After a good light-weather race on Saturday afternoon the yacht Ida won the T. M. Alexander Memorial Cup and miniature in the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s annual race to Te Kume, a distance of about 36 miles.

The course was from the starting line off the wharf via Motuihi Passage, round Waiheke Island to Te Kume.

The start was delayed, all boats except two being many seconds late, but the leaders were wdl bunched when the line was crossed. The order at the start was; lorangi (2m 30s), >'ic-

tory (21m 30s), Prize (17m 30s), Ngatoa (13m), Scout (46m), Moana (19m 30s), Thelma (3m 30s), Ariki (scr.), Ida (30m), Ilex (28m), Windward (38m), Wione (28m), Kotiri (31rn), Waitangi (17m), Rangi (41m), Delville (4Srn). Delville was 6m 20sec late and Rangi 2min late.

At North Head Nga Toa was leading with lorangi and Ariki next. Then came Thelma, Prize, Moana, Victory and Waione, with the others still further away. Off Owanakai lorangi Thelma and Ariki were all very close to each other, and then came Nga Toa, Moana, Prize, Victory and Ida.

The finishing times were; lorangi (25m), 6.59.0; Thelma (35m), 6.59.30; Ariki (scr), 7.1.10; Nga Toa (13m), 7.3; Waitangi (175 m). 7.16.0; Moana (195 m), 7.17.5; Prize (17m 30s), 7.17.25; Ida (30m). 7.18.35: Ilex (28m), 7.23.0; Victory (21£m), 7.23.25; Windward (38m)), 7.35.0; Rangi (41m), 7.37.0; Kotiri (31m), 7.39.0; Waione (28m), 7.39.30; Delville (48m), 7.52.0: Scout (46m), 7.57.0. Result: Ida., 1; Nga Toa, 2: Ilex, 3. Thelma and Rangi tied for fourth prize. M CLASS RACE

A race for the M class yachts was held at 3 p.m., seven boats taking part. The course decided upon was from King’s Wharf to a mark off Rangitoto Wharf and back.

The order at the start was: Maratca, Mawhiti, Maroro, Matarere, Maia, Mischief, Manene. An excellent start was marred only by Manene beating the gun. She lost about half a minute, but her spinnaker was out smartly and she regained lost ground rapidly. The finishing times were: Matarere, 4.42.17; Maratea, 4.46.20; Maroro, 4.47.11; Mawhiti, 4.48.55; Manene, 4.50.7; Maia, 4.55.34. Mischief sailed to finish inside the mark after an exciting contest with Maia, in which superior seamanship proved the deciding factor.

Z CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP SMALL YACHTS AT TAKAPUNA The Z class championship of the harbour was sailed under the control of the Takapuna Boating Club on Saturday. The event was to have been held in conjunction with the anniversary regatta, but owing to the absence of some of the boats at the Cornwell Cup contest the event was postponed. A Tace for the Tauranga sevenfooters was also held and brought out five competitors. Z Class Championship,—Of the seven starters, Tio, Delphino and Ace were the first three away. Kitty went over toe soon and lost about half a minute returning. Trevie tried to set a spinnaker, but fouled in and lost way. Helped by a strong tide the boats made good time on the lead up to Northcote. With spinnakers set fast time was made on the dead run to the clubhouse. The finishing times were: Ace, 4.36.40; Kitty. 4.36.58; Delpliine, 4.37.18; Tio, 4.39.51; Ripple, 4.40.49, Trevie, 4.48.3; Lai Lai, 4.50.34. The result was: Tio, 1; Ace, 2; Kitty, 3. Tauranga Class.—The starters were: Scud, Jonquil. Dot, Buck and Wishwin. Jonquil was first away and maintained her lead, finishing first at 4.38.43, Wishwin was second, at 4.44.5, and Dot third, at 4.48.35. The other boats did not finish.

The Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson, presented the championship flag to Ace and a trophy to Master G. M. Carter, the 13-vear-old skipper of Jonquil, winner of the 7ft. class.

Masters D. Rogers and G. Carter, winning crew of the Cornwell Cup race which was recently contested at Lyttelton, handed the cup to Mr. O. Moller, chairman of the Motor-boat Association.
