FIRES AT NORTHCOTE

The Northcote Fire Brigade received two calls on Saturday to grass fires, and in both cases their promptitude in responding saved the buildings. The first call was received in the morning, when St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and the Parish Hall were endangered by fiercely-burning grass. The basement of the church was charred. The Parish Hall was not damaged. The second call was received in the evening to a fire on a section adjoining the Masonic Hall, Rodney Road. The flames from the grass and pampa were subdued only when within a few feet of the building.«
