Waikato Cup is Next Saturday

EPSOM FORM WILL BE GUIDE “ABAYDOS” REVIEWS HANDICAPS * Outside the Auckland and Ota- | nuhu Cups the chief event in the Province is the Waikato Trotting Cup which annually creates keen interest and parades a spectacular 1 race at Claudelands. For many years the Hamilton prin- 1 cipal event was staged at the March I fixture, but for a couple of seasons it I figured on the December card. Then the club was successful in a request to race at Alexandra Park and a twoday fixture held in 1927 saw the cup again presented in the autumn, and last year it was again contested at the March meeting. The race has always drawn good class fields, and in the past has been ! won by such well-known performers as Kewpie, All Bell, Ahuriri, Goldman VV ailroon, Cone lift' and Lady Dunmore. For this year’s contest, which will be decided at Claudelands next Saturday, quality is again a big feature of tlie list, and when the acceptances are received on Monday evening it will be found that the field is> a thoroughly representative one. Among the entrants are the higher graded The Abbey, Dillon Huon, Loch Moigh. Dundas Boy, Jean McElwyn, Real’ Sight and Nelson Tasker, the well-performed A 1 Bell. Florent and Cold Dial. Uncle Bert and Daytime, and improvers such as Wraekler, Medusa. Warplane. Curfew Boy and the Australian pacer. Torpedo Huon. WAIKATO CUP Of £ 475 and Gold Cup. Limit, 4.36. Warplane . . Lt Plorent .... 12 Torpedo Huon Lt Anselm .... 24 Lord Nepean Lt All Bell .... 24 Medusa . . . Lt Nelson Tasker 24 Dick Dillon . Lt Real Light . 36 Uncle Bert . Lt Lady Dunmore 36 Glandore . . . Lt Goldman ... 36 Wraekler . . Lt Jean McElwyn 48 Curfew Boy . Lt Dundas Boy . GO Napland . . . Lt Loch Moigh . 84 yds. bh. The Abbey . S 4 Gold Dial . . 12 Dillon Huon . 84 Laytime ... 12 Of the limit contingent there are some with, great possibilities, particularly the champion tliree-year-old Wraekler, who is destined to reach New Zealand Cup class before he is much older. Medusa and Warplane, two descendants of Man o’ War, are a pair that give promise of ascending the trotting ladder, at a good pace, while Curfew Boy is also one from whom great things are later expected. Torpedo Huon appears to be finding his New Zealand legs all right, and with a race or two to sharpen him up in the interval should be ready for the opposition next week-end. Uncle Bert is shaping in his best-day style.

and will add interest to the contest. A useful trio appears on the next mark, and each is capable of putting up a creditable showing. Gold Dial omy requires to “take it on” at the getaway and the others will know they are at the races, while if Daytime can see the distance out better, he will be a nuisance. Klorent is overdue, and when right is just the sort of horse to up6et favourite selections. Behind this line comes Anselm, All Bell and Nelson Tasker. The former pair have recently shown they retain their punch, but Nelson Tasker is improving over a distance so well that he should account for both of them. Heal Light, Lady Dunmore and Goldman are together, hut the latter will find the opposition too solid. Lady Dunmore when tyned up is a likely sort, while Real Light is a good pacer, whose drawback appears to be his failure to begin correctly. Little Jean McElwyn is next, and the day she discovers she can get to the end of two miles the opposition will be left lamenting. ITer stable mate, Dundas Boy, is a genuine stayer, and lie is another customer who will yet be elevated to a higher rung of the ladder, and take his place in a New Zealand and Auckland Cup field. The back markers are those classy performers, The Abbey, Dillon Huon and Loch Moigh, but they will find their task of conceding 84 yards to some of these on and near the front

decidedly difficult, and in fact it looks an impossible one, good though they be. With the exception of Florent and Anselm, all those listed for the race under review are taking part at the Otahuhu carnival to-day and again on Wednesday, and their form at Alexander Park will throw a great deal more light on their subsequent prospects for the Claudelands big event. Taking the handicaps as they stand at present, Wraekler, Nelson Tasker, Medusa. Gold Dial. Florent and Berry’s elect, hold the brightest prospects. • Past Winners The following list gives the winners of the Waikato Trotting Cup since 1920: 19;20—Kewpie —Geo.
