CHANG CHUNG-CHANG APPEARS CIVIL STRIFE PROBABLE (United Service) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 10.55 a.m. SHANGHAI. Friday. With the ending of the winter, the regular period of internecine warfare in China is commencing. The reappearance of Marshal Chang Chung-Chang, the former Shantung bandit, at Tupan, will probably result in Shantung again being the centre of civil war. A Japanese report states that Marshal Chang is still supported by Sumeuoff and Naeheff. the White Russian leaders of the former Shantung armies.
A United Service message says that heavy fighting within a score of miles of Chefoo resulted in an initial victory for the Nanking forces of 7.000 under Liu Chen-Nien. Two hundred of the enemy were killed and 300 were made prisoner.
