BREWIN GETS THERE
AUCKLAND CYCLIST'S RIDE AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Friday. Leaving Auckland at one o’clock on the morning of Wednesday last. H. G. Brewin reached Wellington at six o'clock to-night, after doing the journey of 475 miles in 65 hours. He was somewhat unfortunate in losing time at several places owing to various causes. His worst loss of time occurred near Pahatanui, when his back tyre was badly cut about, and he had to wait Jive hours while a wheel and tyre were sent out from Wellington. Even though time was unfortunately lost on the journey, he was successful in knocking seven hours oft Alex. Sutherland’s time of 72 hours in 1927. Seen at Wellington on his arrival by a Sun representative, Brewin said the journey had been a wonderful experience. Night travelling and loss of sleep generally had been a great tax on his physical resources, besides which ho was hampered to some extent by not knowing the. road. Brewin said he waited at Hamilton for J. C. Stewart, who was to have joined him from Rotorua, but Stewart did not turn up, and Brewin rode on alone. He caught up with Stewart past Wanganui, but Stewart later pulled out, and went on to Wellington by train. “Loneliness at night time was the worst feature of the trip.” said Brewin. “Although I beat Sutherland’s time by seven hours, his was a more meritorius ride, as he struck very bad weather. I'm convinced that if I had to do the journey again, I could cut several hours off my time.” Brewin and Stewart intend riding next Wednesday at a special electric light meeting which is being arranged.
