LIFE-SAVING GUN

WILL THROW ROPE LINE 325 YARDS A life-saving rocket apparatus which it is claimed will throw a rope line accurately at 325yds has been invented and patented by Coastguard W. G. Knight, of Scarborough, England. Mr. Knight said that it had been tested and witnessed by a Board of Trade expert. “With the old gun it has never been possible to fire a rocket and throw a line accurately, but with my gun I can fire into the eye of the wind at any elevation and hit the mark,” said Mr. Knight. “I proved this to the expert when in a wind I was dead on the target at 325yds. “The gun, three rockets, three sets of wires, and 325yds of inch rope weigh only 801 b. "I did not know when I began with my invention that a Bill was to be passed compelling ships of 500 tons to carry an apparatus that will throw a rope line at least 150yds. “I am going to make a present of it to the Board of Trade for use at coastguard stations, but outside that it becomes another question.” The big advantages of the invention, Mr. Knight claims, are the small space it occupies and the simplicity and rapidity with which the gun can be brought into action and fired accurately in any wind.

HOW TO READ CHARACTER FACES THAT FASCINATE By BY 1)1 A LIDSTOKE. Of course everyone is a natural reader of character —up to a point. You often feel “drawn to someone” at first glance, and recoil from another. Something “tells” you whom you are in sympathy with, or the reverse. But useful and interesting as this instinct of yours is, it is wise to add to it a little scientific knowledge of physiognomy—character read from the features. Always remember that the face is the mirror of the mind, and do not be misled by actions, which may be intended to deceive. The shape of the forehead is very significant. If it bulges at the top, the owner is imaginative, if in the centre, he is critical, if over the eyes, he is keenly observant. BUSHY BROWS It is surprising how much information an eyebrow can give! If it is bushy and sticks out in all directions you know that the owner is hasty tempered and irritable. Do not unduly annoy those with this type of eyebrow! Artistic sense and love of colour are shown when the eyebrow's form a little pointed arch in the centre of each. Be on your guard

when you see slanting . Chinese eyebrows, a tendency to deception is shown. WINDOWS OF THE SOUL Observe closely the eyes, those “windows of the soul.” Very deep-set ones mean shrewdness. The larger the pupil the quicker the intellect. The colour has a significance too. Dark eyes denote more passion or intensity of feeling than light ones. Grey eyes spell constancy, hazel ones fickleness or caprice. Blue eyes show affection. Watch the fleeting expression in an eye, as it betrays all the secret emotions of love, fear, anger, or surprise. The eye is the great revealer if you learn to interpret it. You can glean much from a mere nose. A large one means ability for action. Napoleon and Wellington had such noses. A small one has less power to turn ideas into practice. The nose that turns up at the end is that of the “pushing person,” the owner is not sensitive and can advance his own interests. LOVE OF BEAUTY You may have noticed that those who have straight Grecian noses have love of beauty, and great refinement of feeling. Avoid the person who has a nose with a pointed, drooping tip, he is suspicious and very inquisitive. It is said that we “make our own mouths.” Cold, hard temperaments

have thin, hard lips, coarse natures have thick, projecting ones, while sympathy and benevolence are shown by a wide, full, lower lip. A broad chin, like the dog’s, Indicates faithful love, a narrow one, like the cat’s, lack of fidelity. A receding chin usually shows weakness of character, a protruding one too much strength and domination. It should be straight with the line of the face. Add these facts to the intuitive judgment you already possess, and the study of faces will become both useful and fascinating to you. OTAUA DRAINAGE BOARD At a meeting of the Otaua Drainage Board on Thursday the chairman, Mr. A. B. Ghezzi, presided. Mr. J. Aylward -waited on the board with reference to a new outlet to his drain. The present drain of 24in pipes was too small, and 36in pipes were neces* sary. Although the Franklin County Council considered it a question for the Drainage Board, it was prepared to pay half the cost of a three-foot concrete pipes. The board will take legal opinion as to its liability. The clerk is to call tenders, returnable by March 8, for cutting and draining the following drains: Upper and Lower Awaroa. Upper and Lower Otaua, Eastern Road, Holmes’s, Bailey’s, Bennett’s and Somerville’s. The board resolved that, providing the ratepayers interested signed an agreement to keep) Hill’s drain clean for 10 years, the board would clean Bennett’s drain np to Raumati’s boundary instead of to Mr. Hyland’s as at present. It was decided that work on the drains must commence before the end of March and the worn to be completed by April 20. _
