FIREMAN CELEBRATES RELEASE BACK TO CELLS AGAIN Discharged from Mount Eden Gaol yesterday morning, John Ryan was in the cells again by five o'clock in the evening. During his brief spell of liberty, Ryan broke his prohibition order and was found by the police stripped to the waist and getting ready for a fight. Ryan, a fireman aged 35, pleaded guilty to fighting on the Queen’s Wharf and breaking the terms of his prohibition order. “It is only a month ago since Ryan was last up for fighting,” said fc?ubInspector McCarthy. “He was discharged from Mt. Eden only yesterday and went down to the wharf, where he met a kindred spirit. The two men slipped through a gate and stripped to the waist when the police arrived. Ryan was caught but the other man got away. Ryan cannot keep away from a fight.” Ryan: He hit me so I hit him back.
Air. W. R. McKean, S.M.: You were prohibited recently, but on the first chance you get you go and drink. Ryan: I was not intoxicated. Fines of £2 for fighting and £1 for the second charge were imposed Default was fixed at 14 days.
