WRONGED SERGEANT
DISMISSAL FROM FORCE REFUSED TO BE BRIBED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.40 p.m. LONDON, Wednesday. The vindication of ex-Poliee Sergeant Josling takes the form of an expunction of the order made in 1922 for his dismissal from the police force, in connection with a false charge of corruption involving Sergeant Goddard. Interviewed, Mr. Josling states that Goddard many times asked him to join in weekly share-outs, but Josling refused, though Goddard said: “The money will he placed in your locker. You need not handle it at all.” As a result of this attempt at bribery, Josling wrote to the Police Commissioner. A Home Office inquiry followed, in which the chairman, commenting on Josling’s attitude, said: “You are a self-righteous individual.’’ As a result of the inquiry, they believed Goddard. The newspapers are almost unanimous in stating that while the amende made to Mr. Josling is in one sense complete, it cannot entirely repay him. The “Morning Post” says that if the question of compensation should come up for consideration, it cannot be doubted that the Home Secretary would regard it not only with sympathy but with generosity.
