POISON GAS STORAGE
FEARS OF DISASTER MINISTER TO INQUIRE The Minister of Defence, the Hon. T. M. \A/ilford, is to have inquiries made into the rumoured intention of the naval authorities to erect a poison gas chamber at the Devonport naval dockyard for the training of men in the use of gas masks. He made this known in a letter read at the Devonport Borough Council meeting last evening. The Harbour Board had invited the borough to express its opinion on the proposal and suggested the securing of the opinion of the Health Department also. The borough decided to consult with the health authorities and defer its reply to the Harbour Board until then. The chamber which is to be erected will be 10ft x 10ft x Bft and it is to be placed near the sheerlegs, close by the torpedo shed. If the sheerlegs were to be moved the chamber would have to be pulled down and the naval authorities would in that case indemnify the board. Public opinion in Devonport does not favour the erecting of the chamber lest some unforeseen circumstance may defeat the proposed safety control rules and lead to disaster in the neighbourhood of the chamber.
