SOLICITOR’S MENTALITY
MAGISTRATE’S FEARS j. B. BATCHELOR REMANDED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day John Black Batchelor, the Christchurch solicitor, who was arrested in Melbourne and brought back to New Zealand, was charged with stealing, on July 9, 1928, the sum of £986, the property of Leonard Percival Voice, and also, that on .August 1, 1928, he received £ 300 which he fraudulently applied to a purpose other than that which he was instructed to do. Chief-Detective Carroll asked for a remand till March 5 as the police were not ready with a third charge. Counsel asked for bail, saying that the Official Assignee wanted accused at his office to unravel some of his accounts. “I have some doubts as to whether Batchelor’s mentality is strong enough to prevent him doing anything foolish,” said the magistrate. “I don’t mean suicide, but perhaps an evasion of trial if on bail. “Batchelor will be remanded till 12.30 p.m. to-morrow. He will be available for the Official Assignee this afternoon. To-morrow we will see how this has worked.”
