“DROVE LIKE MANIAC”
SALESMAN IN CAR TWO HURT IN CRASH (From Our Oxen Correspondent) PAPAKURA, To-day. “Fie drove through Manurewa like a maniac, shouting and making a terrific noise,” said Sergeant Cowan, of Pukekohe, at the Papakura Police Court yesterday. Donald Anthony O’Hara, salesman, of Auckland, had pleaded guilty to driving a motor-car recklessly on October 19 last at Takanini He crashed into a telegraph pole, one woman passenger being practically injured for lifo and the other seriously hurt. Defendant said he had been out of work for three months and he could not afford to pay for counsel. To save expense he pleaded guilty. The car was, he said, defective, as it had previously thrown another man out. The Magistrate, Mr. F. FI. Le.vien: If that was the case, knowing the car to be faulty, you would be all the more guilty, particularly so considering your high speed. Sergeant Cowan, of Pukekohe, said O’Flara had driven through Manurewa like a maniac, shouting and making a terrific noise.
O’Hara was convicted and fined £4 and costs, one month being allowed in which; to find the money.
