Useful Trophy For Manawatu Trots
PRESIDENT’S GENEROUS OFFER CARD FOR MARCH FIXTURE (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. For many years past the Manawatu Trotting Club has been fortunate enough to have been in a position to award a cup to the winner of the principal event at its annual fixture, the well-known Southern owner, Mr. J. R. McKenzie, having been the donor last year. This year the prsident, Mr. W. Mouldey, announced his intention of donating as a trophy an afternoon tea service of four pieces—silver teapot, milk and sugar containers and hotwater jug, together with oak tray. This should prove an added attraction to owners from afield to make the trip to Palmerston North.
Mr. Arthur Manson, secretary of the Manawatu Trotting Club, was present at the Wellington Trotting Club meeting on Saturday to invite nominations from owners for his meeting at Ashhurst on March 13. His mission was far from fruitless for, apart from securing a large number of promises to consider making the trip, he obtained only ten definite nominations. Last year teams of horses came from as far South as Christchurch and the club is hoping for a repetition of this response next month.
The big Manawatu race is valued at £2lO, and is run over two miles, being for horses that can do 4.46 or better. To correspond with this item is the President’s Handicap of £lls, one and a-Quarter miles, with a 2.56 limit.
Improvers are well catered for, the schedule including Ladies’ Bracelet £BO (15 miles), 3.45 limit, Stewards’ Handicap £IOO (2 miles 4.56 limit), Longburn Handicap £9O (1£ miles), 3.40 limit, and Pohangina Handicap, of £IOO, run over a mile and five furlongs. The limit is 3.57, equivalent to a 2.26 mile gait. Straight-out trotters have the Linton Handicap, £9O (15 miles), 3.52 limit and Palmerston North Handicap, £llO (2 miles), 5 minute limit to attract their attention.
Nominations for all events close on Saturday, February 23, not later than 6 p.m., with the secretary, and Mr. S. S. Simpson will announce his adjustments about Saturday, March 2, or probably on the Monday after the Hamilton fixture. Acceptances are due on Friday, March 8.
About 30 to 35 players from Auckland will comprise the touring team to visit Taranaki for a week commencing on March 3. There is included an excellent array of good players for the front divisions of the rink teams, and it will be interesting to watch their progress- But unfortunately, on the skippers’ end, there is a lack of j players. However, an endeavour will be made before the party departs to obtan imore entrants who will strengthen up this important portion of team work. * * * Mr. S. Coldicutt. president of the Auckland Centre, will accompany the party, and will act as manager, while Mr. Norman Heath, Waitemata’s popular ex-president, will fill the position of secretary, and Mr. J. Truman that of treasurer. Taranaki will be the only place visited, and it is rightly anticipated that a real good time will be experienced both on the greens of the clubs visited and at the numerous social functions provided. The visit will occupy one week. The annual pairs tournament conducted by the Auckland Centre commenced yesterday with a very good field of entries, comprising 64 pairs in all from the various clubs. It is usual at this period of the season that greens show signs of wear, hence the centre executive has been obliged to use the outlying greens at the Mangere, Papatoetoe, and Hillsborough Clubs, while the Carlton, Epsom, with the Remuera greens for the final games, gives a good selection of playing surfaces. V. Casey (Carlton), who figured in this event with J. Kilgour some two years ago as runner-up, has entered. Brernner (West End), who won last season with I. Clarke, M. Walker (Auckland), the winner of the pairs championship three years ago in conjunction with P. Moir, and A. Parsons (Ponsonby), who won some four years ago, are among the also T. Procter, Remuera’s president, who figured prominently in the Dominion pairs tournament when that contest was held in Auckland last, and a number of crack players who are among the first flight of bowlers, are among the entrants, making the competition one of exceptional interest. The second Rotorua tournament, which is really the overflow of entries received from the first tournament played the week before last, commenced on Monday, and comprises some 30 teams, which are divided into three sections. What is remarkable is the number of entries from afar this year. Thesa include teams from Masterton, Island Bay, Palmerston Horth, Karori, and Featherston, proving the popularity of the event. This tournament is always regarded as a front-rank bowling contest, and the -result should be watched with interest.
The inter-club pennant competition engaging the attention of the 1,008 members of the various clubs can be voted a complete success from a playing point this season. The progress and results show clearly that there is little to come and go between the playing strengths of the clubs. For instance, Ponsonby—which was the winner of the B section last season—is well down on the list this season, and
West End, which tied with Ponsonby last year in the same section, has 55 per cent, of wins to its credit this season, while Mount Eden heads the B section this season so far with 62 per cent, of wins. What is clear is that among the clubs there is not much between their playing strength, with the exception of the Carlton and Rocky Nook Clubs, who are regularly somewhere within striking distance of success for the ultimate honours. However, the arrangement of bringing these two clubs on to an equal basis with the other clubs remains for the centre executive to arrange, and if this could be done without giving offence to these two clubs, the whole of the entrants could be regarded as being somewhat equal in strength, and thereby give opportunity to all the entrants. Moreover, there is always the question of the number of players shut cut of the competition, which has been a sore point with them, and has always failed to be found adequate solution. With these two points settled, the competition can be regarded as a splendid, huge inter-club competition, with the balance equally retained between the oft-boasted social bowling and competitive play. The postponed round will be played on Saturday week. The play in the fifth round on Saturday last was under good conditions, although a tricky wind made close drawing on some of. the fast greens difficult. The chief interest centred, of course, in the A section around the Helensville Club, which was matched against Onehunga, and naturally the latter club made every effort to win the two games and show that it was capable of doing what the other clubs had failed to accomplish. But in this they were disappointed. An excellent team under Wright, one of Onehunga’s strongest skips, managed to obtain one win against McAlister. But the redoubtable R. Smith sustained his reputation well on the home green in a decisive victory, thereby giving the Helensville Club a 50 per cent, win on the day. Thus it is more than probable that the A section will be won by a small club this season. In the B section, the Mount Eden Club made a fine showing with 7b wins out of 12 games, which displaces Otahuhu for top place. Otahuhu lost heavily to Dominion Road. The latter club has done well this year. There is no doubt that the improvement in the new playing surface this year is reflected in the members’ ability to play more accurately. The club is to be congratulated on making the fine showing that it did against the Otahuhu Club, which has done so well in the competition up to this stage. * * *
Mr. R. Rogerson, the Western Australian skip, who in the recent test match between Australia and New Zealand skipped the only team that had three wins to its credit, is in Auckland, and will be here for a few days. * * *
Mr. H. W. Frost, of the Carlton Club, is leaving Auckland on an extended visit to England, where he will visit some of the clubs that entertained the New Zealand bowlers recently on tour.
The annual veterans’ match, arranged by the veterans’ association, is being played on the Auckland Club’s green this afternoon, and it is a heartening sight to see the players who have reached those full ripe years of matured manhood nimbly rolling their bowls, reminiscent of the days of their younger years. Apropos of this pleasing feature, on Saturday last Air. J. S. Dicketts, the popular assistant secretary of the Auckland Club, and winner of the veterans’ competition at that club this season, was the recipient of a badge arranged by Air. H. Hemus, and presented by Dr. Hardie Neil. THE TEAMS LIST SATURDAY’S GAMES The following teams will represent their respective bowling clubs in the inter-club matches next Saturday: West End v.
