Blimp Wins the Woodville Cup
SPRINT TO ROYAL DUKE ALI BABA’S SURPRISE WOODVILLE, Wednesday. In glorious weather the Woodville District Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opened to-day. There was a good attendance, and the totalisator showed that betting was spirited. The machine handled £15.471, against £13,170, an increase of £2,301. Oringi Hurdles Locarno (£458) carried almost half the investment money in the Oringi Hurdles, there being a marked drop to Panorama (£140) and Novar (£136). While backers of the favourite had an anxious moment when Locarno made an indifferent jump at the last fence, he had sufficient pace to recover his position and win very nicely. Red Bank and Locarno were the pacemakers throughout, Wilderness being ahead of Asleep, Panorama, First Prince, Novar and Deluge as they passed through the straight. Going along the back Panorama ran forward into third position, but Red Bank and Locarno were still well clear crossing the top, although approaching the entrance Novar ran up and was with Locarno as they turned into the straight. At the final fence Locarno made a faulty jump and Novar momentarily wrested the lead, but the favourite came again to win by a length, with Panorama two lengths back. There was a like gap to Red Bank, who was ahead of First Prince, Asleep and Deluge, who finished in a bunch. Locarno won Avith a lot in hand, but both Red Bank and Novar ran well. Maiden Stakes j The good field of 15 runners went Ito the post in the Maiden Stakes, Kinross (£392), Merica (£270) and | Snowshoe (£258) being the only ones ito attract strong support. A ragged ! dispatch saw Snowshoe lead Tapestry, Kinross and Marica to the turn for j home, but at the straight entrance ! Tapestry was showing the tvay to I Snowshoe, Kinross, Marica and Ali Baba, the latter pair being on the outside of the leading division. Over the final pinch Marica and Ali Baba drew clear, and although the former promised to be the winner a few strides from the post the outsider came again to snatch the victory by a nose and pay a long price, there being a gap of three lengths to Tap- ; estry. Snowshoe hung on to fill fourth place, with Malahat, Kiriana i and Kinross in a bunch close handy. Woodville Cup /
Oratrix, Doree and Nucleus Avere the defections from the Cup race, and in the absence of the first-named pair Blimp (£551) came in for strong support, the Foxton Cup winner being far in advance of Lady Limond (£398) and Anolo (£310) in the betting market, and while the favourite carried his backers through the other pair disappointed. Kilmezzo went to the front at the barrier rise to pilot Blimp, Lady Limond, Imperial Spark and Comical through the straight, Courageous being well back. The pacemaker went right away along the back, but Blimp and Anolo slowly gathered him up crossing the top and were up with Kilmezzo at the straight entrance, the Kilbroney gelding being then finished with. Blimp drew out with Briar Root and Imperial Spark in pursuit, the favourite going on to win by a good two lengths, with Imperial Spark a like distance ahead of Briar Root, who weakened slightly over the last 50 yards. Anolo was not persevered with and Kilmezzo caught him on the post, Courageous and Lady Limond being next to finish. Blimp Avon with the greatest ease, and Imperial Spark went well. County Handicap
In the absence of White Ringlet and Tourist, Avho, together with General Wai, were absentees from the County Handicap , Bernera (£326) was installed favourite, Patearoa (£219) coming in for surprising support in view of his past performances, with Delude (£141) next in demand. Money Mint was smartest to begin, and the Paper Money gelding led Water Spear, Boundary, Bernera and Monetize to the turn for home, where Water Spear joined the leader, Boundary, Bernera and Monetize being well bunched. Delude made a run crossing the top and was in line with Second Thought, Bernera and Money Mint at the straight entrance. Water Spear came through on the rails, and he and Bernera fought out the issue, the favourite prevailing by a short length, Money Mint being a length and a-half back. Then came Monetize, Cloyne and Delude in a bunch. Ruahine Handicap Ridgemount and Bonogne were absentees from the Ruahine Handicap, in which Commendation was making his first appearance following upon his breakdown. Despite such the public installed the Limond gelding favourite Avith £592 invested upon his prospects, there being, however, good money for High Disdain (£334) and Royal Duke (£291). Miss Pat, from No. 1 position at the barrier, was first away, with High Disdain, Lady Ideal, Merry Mint and Commendation in attendance. High Disdain ran to the front crossing the top from Miss Pat, Commendation, Royal Duke and Arrow Lad, and ,a great race ensued over the final pinch. Commendation promised to be the Avinner, but his rider was compelled to draw the whip and the champion Aveakened, Royal Duke and ArroAV Lad beating him over the last feAV yards. The last-named came very fast, but could not reach Royal Duke, who Avon by half a length with Commendation three-parts of a length back. Miss Pat battled on gamely but was beaten into fourth place, with High Disdain right up. Sapling Stakes
My Own (£484), Hot Springs (£387) and Royal Parade (£378), monopolised the betting market in the Sapling Stakes, but the winner turned up in the Hunting Song gelding Hunting Boy, who was making his debut on a racecourse. The ultimate Avinner was smartest to begin from Symballo, Royal Parade, Coon Song and Hot Springs, the leading di\ r ision being Avell bunched as they crossed the top. Symballo was just ahead of Hunting Boy, Coon Song and Crash as they straightened out, the favourite being still badly placed. In the run to the post Hunting Boy and Coon Song appeared to have the finish to themselves, until My Own came with a
great run to head off Coon Song on the post, although there Avas a margin of half a length separating the filly and Hunting Boy. Then came a gap to Crash and Symballo. My OAvn Avas very unlucky to lose. Victoria Handicap A great betting race in the Victoria Handicap saAV Royal Lineage (£432) preferred to Mister Gamp (£400), with Billion a matter of eight tickets lesser fancied. Break o’ Day and High Court led Red Fuchsia and Royal Lineage going aAvay from home, there being some crowding at the turn, Balloon being one of the principal sufferers. The favourite ran up into the van going along the back, Red Fuchsia almost immediately joining him, and the pair shoAved the way to the straight entrance to High Qpurt, Disrank,
Break o’ Day and Full Mark, Mister Gamp having meantime been improving his position. With a surprising burst of speed Disrank, Avho was making his first appearance in a distance e\-ent, shot out, Full Mark and Mister Gamp also coming very fast. Disrank had still a half length advantage at the post, there being head intervals between Mister Gamp, Full Mark and H.igh Court. Royal Lineage Avas fifth, with Balloon, who had come fast from the turn, ahead of Red Fuchsia. President’s Handicap * Moutoa Treasury Avas a good favourite for the President’s Handicap. Soon after entering the straight Queen’s Choice was in charge, but he failed in the rum home, and Moutoa Treasury Avon by half a length from Gold Cure, with Queen’s Choice a similar distance away third and Nucleus fourth. SATURDAY NEXT LIST OF ACCEPTORS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Acceptances for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday are: HORNBY HANDICAP 9 Furlongs.
Rapine’s Defeat Rapine cut up badly in the Earle Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday. A solid pace was set all the way, and, although it Avas thought that this was likely to suit the old felloAv, the reverse was the case. He was being urged along half a mile from home, but could make little Impression on the leaders, and at the end Reed allowed him to run on quietly and Avisely did not knock him about. It is just possible that the Cup race knocked him out temporarily, for after all it has to be remembered that he came in only in mid-November after twenty months out in the paddock. To have Avon a Wanganui Cup inside three months was no mean task. Latest advices indicate that Rapine has probably run his last race.

UNDER FIRE TASMANIAN SENSATION DETAILS OF SHOOTING CASE As briefly cabled at the time, there were sensational happenings at the conclusion of the Northern Tasmanian Trotting Club’s meeting at Elphin (T.) on February 9, as a result of which William Charles Clear, a rider of trotting horses, is locked up on charges of having attempted to murder Mr. A. A. Evans, secretary of the club, and of having presented a loaded firearm at Mr. C. Vaughan, the club’s confidential officer. At the end of one of the races a rider was brought before the stewards and disqualified for three months for inconsistent running, in connection with the horse Cardinal. When the racing was over the man was summoned and further charged with having used insulting language to one of the committeemen during the afternon. Obtains Rifle After the committeeman concerned and Mr. Evans had given evidence, he was disqualified for 12 months. He left the course for a few minutes, and then was seen by Mr. Vaughan to enter by the horse gate with a rifle. Mr. Vaughan warned the secretary, and then went forward to intercept the armed man. Upon Mr. Vaughan trying to reason with him, he is alleged to have pointed the rifle in his direction, and made threats. The weapon then appears to have become jammed. Mr. Vaughan dodged out of the gate and made a hurried search for a policeman. A M iss The armed man then made toward the riders’ dressing-room, and reached a position where he could obtain an uninterrupted view of the secretary’s
office. After firing - one shot into the ground, he is alleged to have taken aim at Mr. Evans, who was standing outside his office, and fired. The bullet hit the woodwork just above the secretary’s head. Meanwhile Mr. Vaughan had met John Jackson, of Melbourne. Mr. Jackson returned to the course, and, approaching the armed man, overpowered him and obtained possession of the rifle. BIG MONEY V.R.C CONTESTS The following are the acceptances for the two leading handicap events to be run at the Victoria Racing Club’s forthcoming autumn meeting: NEWMARKET HANDICAP Of £25 <?ach, with £2,500 added: 6 fur. (Run Saturday, March 2.)
OWNER’S TEMPER USES WHIP ON JOCKEY WARNED OFF AS RESULT For alleged striking jockey W. Hogan on the face with a whip at the Richmond (Victoria) races last week, M. Paturzo was warned off the Victorian Trotting and Racing Association courses by the stipendiary stewards. The Loch Amos gelding Nophaie has run disappointing races on the pony courses recently, and it was a great surprise to many, including the owner, Mrs. M. Paturzo, when the gelding won the second heat of the Purse at Richmond after drifitng in the betting market from 6 to 1 to double figures. When the placed horses returned to the weighing scales the owner’s husband, M. Paturzo, after haranguing the rider, W. Hogan, is alleged to have struck the lad over the face with a butt end of a whip. The stipendiary stewards inquired into the matter, and after taking evidence from the rider and hearing the explanation of Paturzo. decided to mark their disapproval of Paturzo’s conduct by warning him off the V.T. and R.A. courses. Mrs. Paturzo engaged another jockey to ride Nophaie in the run-off with Sealer, who had won the first heat, and the gelding was hard pressed to win.
