EXTENSIVE MAINTENANCE FRANKLIN COUNTY ROADS *At a meeting: of the "Franklin County j Council vesterday the chairman, Air. J. XV. Massey, M.P., presiding:, a deputation, representing: the ratepayers and motor taxpayers of Drury and surrounding - districts, advocated that the (.Treat South Hoad, from Fapakura to the Bombay Hills deviation, be taken from the Slippery Creek bridge on the northern side of Drury in a straight lme to the overhead bi'idge at Rnnciman. This route is short and would be much cheaper to construct that any other. The council engineer, Air. J. F. McArthur, will prepare an estimate of the cost of the proposed route in time for the March m The l "Minister of Lands and tfie Minister of Public Works advised they would visit the Franklin. Hauraki and Raglan electorates probably at the beginning of Alarch. . The Public Works Department advised that the Cabinet had approved a grant of £1.470 for the Whakatiwai Bridge, pnd the New Brighton-North County boundary road. The Health Department and others urged that steps should be taken to prevent the pollution of Hay’s Creek, Fapakura, by a metal quarry company. Settlers interested have already applied to the Supreme Court for an injunction. No action was taken. The proposed Clevedon-Aliranda Road, along the foreshore of the Hauraki Gulf, would cost about £40,000 and the Government is unable to do this work at present. Further representations are to be made to the Ministers when they visit the district next month, for a Government grant toward the cost of the work. Sixty-one ratepayers petitioned that an estimate be made of the cost of grading and metalling the road from Whangarata to Pokeno before a poll was taken on a proposal to raise money for a new road along the old railway line. This will be done. The tender of Mr. A. C. Reynolds, v ictoria Road, Devonport, of £991 14s Sd for the erection of the Whakatiwai Bridge at Miranda was accepted.
TAUMARUNUI NOTES
MAIN ROADS IMPROVEMENTS At the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council it -was resolved that the council should instal electrical fittings where desired. The decision negatived directly a recommendation of the works committee that the wiring of houses should not be undertaken except under Members of the Taumarunui Bowling Club are highly gratified at the marked improvement in the green, under the careful attention of Air. J. H. Bowater. of Wanganui. The expert himself is pleased with the result of his work, and believes that. with careful treatment under the supervision of Air. D. AT. Peek, the Taumanlnui green will be second to none in New Zealand. Air. Bowater has also been improving the croquet greens. The marked improvement being carried out on the service road between Taumarunui and Te Kuiti is shown by the fact that between Taumarunui and AVaione Siding five railway crossings have been closed, and with the early completion of a bridge about two miles from Taumarunui it will be unnecessary for travellers to cross the railway line between that town and Ongarue. TE PUKE NOTES TOWN BOARD MEETS The question of closer settlement in the Te Puke district was discussed at the last town board meeting. Air. Saunders pointed out that public bodies in other districts were taking a keen interest in this matter, and he considered that the board should bring this before the Alinister for Lands.
Other members of the board endorsed Mr. Saunders’s views, and expressed the
