ARCHITECTS COMPETE
CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY CONDITIONS OUTLINED In connection with the competition among British architects for a design for the Christchurch Art Gallery, Air. S. Hurst Seager, the well-known Christchurch architect, has forwarded a letter to The Sun which clears up any erroneous impressions which may exist in the minds of the general public. The competition is open to all the members of the Royal Institute of British Architects and affiliated institutes, and the conditions state that the plans were to be received by the town clerk in Christchurch not later than February 13, “accidents in transit excepted.” Plans arriving later are being disqualified. The British competitors* plans were received at the office of the High Commissioner in London up till January 3, and were shipped to New Zealand by the Port Fremantle, reaching about February 18 or 19. These plans are being forwarded to Christchurch immediately, unpacked by the town clerk and all the plans forwarded to the assessor in one consignment. From all the plans the assessor will choose three, and the authors of the selected designs will each receive £IOO on condition that they prepare the finished drawings, modified, if necessary, in accordance with the assessor’s markings. The final selection from these three wili be made by the jury of award, consisting of the donor, Mr. R. E. McDougall, the Rev. J. K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. Richard Wallwork, director of the School of Art, Christchurch, and the assessor, Air. S. Hurst Seager.
