UNLUCKY!
Jockey Metcalf Still in the Wars A FEW MORE BONES LEFT A run of ill-luck has befallen the : Palmerston North horseman, T. Met- j calf, for a fall in the Harrison Handi- | cap at Wanganui on Saturday resulted in this popular little jockey suffering injuries which will again keep him out of the saddle for some little time at least. It was at the spring meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club that Borsalene fell during the running of the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, bringing down Briar Root, who had been racing behind, but whereas T. Webster, the rider of the former, escaped injury. Metcalf, on Briar Root, sustained concussion and fracture of bones in the foot, wrist and band. Getting a Hr.bit Saturday’s accident was almost exactly similar, although in this instance R. Marsh, the rider of Avro, who was the first to fall, did not come off scathless. Metcalf was once again . picked up unconscious and, following j his being taken home to Palmerston i North on . Sunday, he underwent an Xray examination, which pointed to the horseman having again suffered a fracture of a bone in the wrist of I the right hand, and of the little finger !of the left hand—-the opposite hand lon this occasion. He also carries facial abrasions. The injury came at a most unfortunate time, for Metcalf had been showing his old-time form in the saddle and had ridden The Raider, the winner of the open sprint on the opening day at Wanganui. His many followers on the racecourse will wish him a speedy recovery.
