Hertzog, in a debate on the second reading of the Native Representation Bill at a joint sitting, said' that if it gave the natives equality " '.th the whites, the latter could pack tlieir bundles and leave s outh Africa. They must make the natives understand that s uch a demand was impossible. While admitting that the coloured people suffered injustice, he stressed that the whites would bitterly regret driving the coloured people to tom forces with the natives.
