VARSITY COUNCIL

YESTERDAY’S MEETING The council of the Auckland University College met yesterday. The Registrar of Victoria College forwarded the following resolution about the grant for the chair of Education: “That the council ask the other colleges to co-operate with Victoria University College in approaching the Minister of Education, with a view to having the present grant for the chair made part of the statutory grant—the college to obtain fees for all students attending the -classes of Education and to be responsible for the whole of the assistance in the department.” “Wo should not endorse this,” said the chairman, Sir George Fowlds. “On last year’s basis it would mean £2BB additional fees, but we would be called to provide for an extra full-time assistant. I suggest that we should hold it over until the next conference of the four colleges.” The council agreed with the chairman. The following donations were reported to have been received: £IOO from the Pliilson Trust, for the medical library; a collection of specimens of minerals and rocks from Mr. N. D. Cochrane for the Geology Department: and a cheque for~ £SO 18s Gd from the Auckland Clinical Society for the medical library. On the application 'of the Professor of Forestry, it was decided to appoint an assistant lecturer in the subject, on a salary of £l5O.
