TWO APPEARANCES?
BORG’S BRIEF STAY IN AUCKLAND MATCHED WITH THE BEST There is now a possibility of two appearances at carnivals in Auckland of the world's distance swimming champion, Arne Borg, of Sweden. Borg is expected to arrive at Auckland from Sydney on the morning of Monday, March 11, and a carnival lias been fixed for that evening at the Tepid Baths. The best sprint swimmers will be matched against him in an invitation 100 yards, and two of New Zealand’s best swimmers, David P. Lindsay and Gordon Bridson, of Auckland, are to be asked to stay out of the sprint event in order to race with Borg in a first-class middle-distance handicap. The same evening Borg will give a demonstration for quarter of an hour and later will play in a It water polo team against Auckland A. Borg and his wife will be entertained during their brisf stay and will be taken on motor journeys. If the Aorangi does not sail for Vancouver until a late hour on Tuesday night. March 12, Borg will be asked to appear at a carnival the same evening. At present the Auckland Swimming Centre is engaged in making extensive preparations for the visit. A formal invitation is now being sent to Borg. Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian, holds the record sprint time for the Tepid Baths, but is quite possible that Borg will break the time. Suva, Fiji, has now entered into the field of searchers for appearances by Borg. He will pass through Suva on the Aorangi. and arrangements are under way there for a swimming exhibition by the champion.
BOY WINS HARBOUR SWIM RACE AT OPOTIKI (Special to THE SUN) OPOTIKI, To-day. A 14-year-old youth won the first harbour swim at Opotiki for many years. Fifteen entered, three of the competitors being women. H. Pile was the winner, and he was not headed, leading from the beginning. A. Short was in second place. Miss Ensoll was the only woman to complete the course, and she received a. special trophy. Pile received a gold medal given by Air. H. Larmer.
