Trotting in a Gale of Wind

BIG RACE AT HUTT PARK LOGAN PARK DEFEATS JEAN McELWYN (Special to THE SUX) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The howling gale blowing at Petone on Saturday during the progress of the Champion Handicap, settled all expectations of fast time being recorded, nevertheless the finish between the brilliant middle-distance pacer, Logan Park, and the game Jean McElwyn, was an exciting one. Logan Park £712, Ahuriri £6S6 and Padlock £586 were the best backed candidates in the Champion Handicap, in which there were no scratchings. The race in itself was disappointing, a howling gale being against the recording of even handicap time. Padlock never found his hopples, and this

procedure on the part of the Hal Zolocli gelding was rather unexpected,' and incidentally expensive. When the tapes were released Jean McElwyn began like a little lady, and soon opened up a break of several lengths on Epigram, who was pacing very patchily. Jean McElwyn was still in the van with a round to go. but Logan Park was going comfortably in second place, and had as his nearest attendants Epigram, Logan Chief and Ahuriri, who

was going great guns past Jackie Audubon, but in doing so was covering a lot of extra ground. Jean McElwyn turned it on to some purpose round the back the last time, but Logan Park was keeping stock of it ail, and when the best was asked of the Logan Pointer gelding inside the distance, he soon settled the tiring but game Jean McElwyn, to lead her home by three-quarters of a length, with Logan Chief eigh.? lengths further back i in third place. Next to finish were j Ahuriri, Jackie Audubon and Epigram \ in that order. No doubt the best horse j over the distance prevailed in a slowrun race, but Jean McElwyn put up a fine performance. Epigram paced a poor race and Jackie Audubon lacked his usual punch, while Logan Chief showed a fair front over the last half mile. Ahuriri produced a torrent of speed in the middle stages, but the distance did not suit him.
