UNKEPT PROMISE
TOMBSTONE FOR MAORI CHIEF After 43 years the Government lias | not carried out its promise to erect a tombstone over To Heu Heu, famous j Maori chief, the father of Te lieu Heu j Tuk.no, who presented Tongariro National Park to the nation. When the park was given in ISSC, j a condition was that the tombstone j should be provided. Mr. John Cullen, honorary park | warden, reminded his audience of the I promise when he spoke at the laying j of the foundation stone of Chateau i Tongariro at the park on Saturday. j It was stated that contributions of i JISO each would come from the Xa- j tional Park Tourist Company, 'Limited. I chateau proprietors, and the Fletcher 1 Construction Company. Limited, build- j ns of the chateau. The Hon. A. J j .Stallworthy, Minister of Health, said that he would undertake to see that the Government would support the ! project. Mr. J. B. Thompson, chairman of tlie j National Park Board, said that the hoard would erect a tablet in the vuatvau in memory of Te lieu I_eu.
