SLACKNESS CRITICISED

CORONER ON MACHINERY INSPECTOR YOUNG MAN KILLED BY FAN Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The methods adopted by the Machinery Department in connection with inspections of machinery were criticised by the coroner, Mr. H. P. Lawry, to-day, when the inquest concerning the death of Ronald Kempthorne, aged 17, was concluded. Kempthorne died on January 29 after receiving injuries through coming into contact with a fan at the glue works at Hornby. “I think it is only right that I should comment on the actions of the Machinery Department in this matter,” said Mr. Lawry, after returning a formal verdict that death was due to injuries received. “It was a surprising thing to me that the book with the notice regarding the erection of a protective covering to the fan could not be found. “The evidence seems to show that at no time did the inspector put the notice into writing.” 1
