BIGGER SUBSIDIES NOW
MANUKAU’S CONCRETE ROADS
PUT DOWN TOO SOON “There have been no regrets for the choice of a concrete scheme for the Manukau sections of the Great South Road. However, we have been unfortunate in being progressive, inasmuch as our road has been down only two years, and to-day we And local bodies 20 miles from Auckland being offered £3 for £l, whereas we secured less than £1 for £l.” This statement was mado by Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman of the Manukau County Council, at the meeting of the council yesterday, when the question of another appeal for a retrospective subsidy came under consideration. Mr. Waters said a concrete road from Panmuro to Howick was required. If they had toll gates for a few years they would not worry about an increased subsidy. It was decided to accept the invitation of other local bodies to arrange a deputation to reopen the question of subsidies with the Government. It was stated that arrangements were being made by the Otaliuhu Borough Council for the bitumen surfacing of the old bridge on the Great South Road, at the borough and county boundaries. The county council’s share would be £4O, the borough paying a larger sum, and a subsidy of about £ 200 was expected from the Highways Board. The engineer was authorised to call tenders within a few days for the expenditure of several hundred pounds on the improvement of Campbell’s Corner, a dangerous bend in the road to Buckland’s Beach, near Pigeon Mountain.
It was reported that 29 applications for building permits had been received during the month, totalling £12,995.
