Rich District

PUKEKOHE’S ANNUAL SHOW

Dominion Records Claimed (SUN’S Special Reporter.) PUKEKOHB, To-day. REELECTING a rich and highly-produetive district, the 44th annual fixture of the Franklin A. and P. Association which opened at Pukekohe yesterday drew record entries in all sections. The dairy classes were particularly well supported, several Royal Show winners coining forward. Dominion records were claimed for entries in both the Shorthorn and Jersey sections. The hunters’ classes attracted some of the best horseflesh of the district, and proved a big draw to the general public. Thrilling exhibition stunts by an airplane, and many other novelty events combined to make the fixture a most successful one.

TT'NTRIES in the dairy cattle, sheep, horse and pig - sections combined to make up one of the finest exhibitions of well-bred stock seen on an Auckland provincial showground. The general quality of the entries was high, testifying in no uncertain manner to the trend of the breeders of the district toward higher production through the medium of better-bred stock. The dairy cattle sections were particularly well supported, some of the best-known breeders of the province having entries forward. In these classes many Royal Show prize-win-ners competed for position. Claimed by the association to be the biggest collection of Jerseys ever entered at a single New Zealand show fixture, the Jersey section certainly drew some high quality stock, making the allocation of the top positions extremely difficult. A. Moreland and Son’s Fairy Eminent Raleigh, champion of the recent Royal, Waikato and Auckland Shows, added another championship to his record. The champion cow, W. H. Carter’s Ivy Fox, was a particularly fine type of a high producing Jersey, while W. H. Meir’s Jersey Brae Seashell was also well worthy of a place in a show-ring of high quality Jerseys. A feature of the section was the strong support from a large number of breeders, while the showing of young stock in the’ yearling heifer class with over 20 entries, was undoubtedly one of the best ever seen in a New Zealand showring. That Pukekohe is a stronghold of the Milking Shorthorn breed was indicated by the strong showing of the breed, here again the number of entries giving the officials confidence to claim a Dominion record. The general quality was high. The champion cow, G. D. Hall’s Matangi Lilac, was a specially fine type of a milking animal with most of the high-producing characteristics of the breed well pronounced. R. I>. Duxfield’s Pine Farm Gem IV. added another championship to liis record. A feature of the Shorthorn section was the attention paid to tli€> “make-up” of the various entries, few not having been specially prepared for the show-ring. The Friesian section was not quite as well supported as the Shorthorns or Jerseys, but, nevertheless, the entries were of a fairly high standard, some of the best blood of the province coming forward. Entries in the junior classes were particularly pleasing. Although not a strong section numerically, the Ayrshires, from a quality point of view, were well up to the general standard, the majority of the cattle being of a very fine type. A section for Red Polls attracted entries only from the only breeder, Mrs. Ellen McGuire. Most breeds of sheep were represented, and the quality of the entries, generally, was well up to show standard. The support given most sections, however, was not strong. In the Lincoln classes E. Barriball was the only entrant. C. Hodgkinson was the sole supporter of the Border Leicesters. H. E. Potter and E. M. Wilson divided the prizes between them in the English Leicester section, the latter taking the championships. Slightly better support was given the Romney classes, J. W. Benseman taking two firsts and one second prize, F. Mullins two firsts including the champion ram ticket, A. D. Bell one first and champion and four seconds, Hobson Farm. Ltd. one first. J. Duder and E. Barriball divided the prizes in the Shropshire Downs classes. The Southdown section was strongly supported; H. S. McCarrrrll took four firsts and. one second, O. R. and 31. Hutchinson took two firsts and two seconds, Hobson Farm took two seconds. With Ryelands, the prizes went to J. Schlaepfer and the Wesley College entries, the former taking the majority of the firsts. The support given the pig sections was rather disappointing, considering the strength of the dairy sections and t.he district drawn on. Entries cf Largo Whites could have been expected in far greater numbers. The quality of the limited showing, however, was qui".e good. G. E. Yelchich, Wesley College, G. G. Munro, G. G. Rodgers and Jas. Rock divided the honours in the Berkshire section, the only group at all well represented. Wesley College was the sole exhibitor of Tamworths and Devons. Limited entries of Large Whites were given by T. M. Davis, G. E. Yelchich and J. J. Hoe. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Championships were awarded as follow: HORSES Draught mare: A.
