VICTORY IN WANGANUI CUP SURPRISE IN THE SPRINT WANGANUI. TluumUiv UETERAX RAPINE staged a thrilling come-back when lie * landed the Wanganui Cup yesterday from a small luir seloei field, being third favourite of the half-dozen runners. His win gave jockey Roy Reed his third success in this important distance race, for he had scored previously on Income and Sunart. The Raider, the outsider of the field, easily won the sprint.

Despite the gloomy predictions of the pessimists, the Wanganui Jockey Club had a most successful opening: day to-day, the attendance being larger than on the corresponding daylast year. The weather was fine, but very windy, and the going was firstclass. A feature of the day’s racing was i the run of successes that came the : way of the Pordell stable, presided i over by F. Tilley, who won with High Falutin’. Glenartney. and Freehold, while Cashier dead-heated for second, and Laughing Prince was third in the Cup. ' Avro was the only unplaced candidate from Fordell. Rapine won the Cup like a champion, and received a great ovation on returning to the scale. The totalisator turnover showed an increase of £2.735 10s. the total being £25,812, compared with £23.076 10s. Maiden Race | The best backed trio filled the places j in the opening event, the Maiden Race.

High Falutin’ was made a,good favourite, being entrusted with £616, support for Marica (£396) and Endorse ( £334) enabling the supporters of High Falutin’ to get a good price. Endorse soon got a break on the field when the barrier went up, making the pace ci torrid one, and she was followed by Sambur, High Falutin’, Speedaway, and Naselle over the first furlong. As they commenced to cross the top, she was half a dozen lengths ahead of Marica, High Falutin’, Naselle, and Sambur. The leader started to come back to the field on the turn into the straight, and when they had straightened up she was just in front of High Falutin’, with Marica, Naselle, and Vinella nearest of the others. In the run to the judge, the favourite easily held his own, to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length from Endorse, who lasted long enough to beat Marica by a length. Vinella was fourth, and at intervals came Naselle, Sambur, Otauru Lass, and Vaucluse. Stewards’ Handicap The Stewards’ Handicap was a good betting race, most support coming for Mendip, £616. and King, £515, but Keddar (£439) and Star Area (£341) also counted friends. Keddar was a trifle slow to move. Joy King showed the way out of the straight to Vigilance. Partaga, Keddar, Mendip, Maui, and Hipo. At the six furlongs, .Toy King was still in front from Vigilance. Hipo, Keddar. Partaga, Maui, Mendip. and Avro, Star Area being last. Hipo went to the front along tho back, and three furlongs from home was the pilot for Joy King, Vigilance, Partaga, Avro, Mendip, and Keddar. The leaders came round the turn in close order, Hipo, Avro, Mendip, and Star Area being in line, with Partaga and Moutoa Treasury close up. A great struggle developed in the run to the judge, and in a stirring finish Star Area came round on the outside, to snatch victory by a nose

from Moutoa Treasury, who beat Partaga by half a length for second place. Maui was half a length away fourth, and close up were Keddar, Avro, and Hipo. with Joy King and Mendip next, but they were all in a bunch. Westmere Hurdles I Nine saddled up for the Westmere 1 Hurdles, and a warm favourite was | found in Elicit, £715, with Glengariff j £440, and Vexatious £4Ol. the only others inquired for. Harrowgate whipped round when the barrier went up. Bonhomme, Elicit, Vexatious, and Koburant showed the way over the first fence. Passing the stand the first time, Elicit, Roburant and Vexatious were together, ahead of Liana’s Lad. Vivo, Glengariff. and Bonhomme. Then Elicit went into the lead. to show the way down the back to Roburant, Bonhomme, Liana’s Lad, Atareria, and Glengariff:. The favourite increased his lead crossing the top, and Glengariff improved his position, and when they turned for home Elicit was five lengths ahead of Vexatious, with a gap of three lengths back to Glengariff. and then came ; Bonhomme and Vivo. Once over the i last fence Elicit came on to win by two • lengths from Glengariff, who finished | well to beat Vexatious by a length and three-quarters for second place. Four lengths back was Vivo, with Atareria •and Bonhomme next, ahead of Diana’s [ Lad and Roburant. Victory Hack Mister Gamp sprang a mild surprise | in the Victory Hack Handicap, for j which Cashier £984 was preferred to i Roi de Val £6OB, The Warden £363,

and Balloon ,1.318. Mister Gamp earr.vins" £244. From a good start Ihe Warden went to the front to pilot Fallow. Green Acre, Volplane and Balloon out of the straight, and at the six furlongs the order was The Warden, Fallow, Volplane. Green Acre. Balloon. Acred Cashier, Boi de Aal and Mister Gamp. There was little change at the four furlongs, where The Warden was still bowling along in front of Fallow. Green Acre, Volplane. Acred. Cashier, and Mister Gamp, but at the entrance to the straight Mister Gamp had improved his position, being just behind. The Warden and Green Acre, while behind him were Acred. I uho't ana Cashier. The Warden and Green Acre were done with once straightened up for the run home, and Mister Gamp went on to score by three-quarters of a length from Cashier and Gasnapper, who crossed the line together. Acred, Green Acre. The Warden and Balloon followed. The Cup AVhen the six acceptors paraded for the Cup there was a rush to get on Laughing Prince, and the top-weight was entrusted with L 1.225, which was £SOO more than Toma £7ll. while there lias £649 on Rapine. Bright Glow went into the lead at the start from Toma, Laughing Prince, Rapine and Hynanna. Crossing the top Bright Glow, Hynanna and Laughing Prince were in that order, and running past the stands the first Ante Bright Glow was the pilot for Hynanna, Home Made, Laughing Prince, Toma and Rapine. Running into the back stretch Bright Glow put a break on the field of three lengths, with Laughing Prince, Toma, Home Made, Rapine and Hynanna the order of the others. The field closed on the leader across the top. where Bright Glow was two lengths ahead of Laughing Brinee and l'oma, which pair were a couple of lengths in front of Rapine, with the other two already out of it. Ti oma and Rapine improved their positions on the turn for home, and into the straight Bright Glow was just in front of Yoma, Rapine and Laughing Prince. The leader was done with at the distance, where Rapine and Yoma commenced a great struggle, both fighting it out to the bitter end, Rapine prevailing by a head. Laughing Prince was two lengths away, with Bright Glow a length further back, five lengths ahead of Home Made. Hynanna was well back, not being persevered with Juvenile Handicap Backers went hot and strong for Glenartnev in the Juvenile Handicap* the Fordell-trained gelding having £1,164 on his chances, with a big drop to Becky Sharp II and Monoloff £347. The favourite never left the issue in doubt, for he was the first to show out from Crash and Courtlike, with Becky Sharp II and Monolol’f slow to move. Glenartney showed the way across the top to Courtlike, Monoloff and Crash, these racing at intervals. Into the straight the order was Glenartney. Monoloff, Crash and Courtlike. There was no doubt about the result over the final stages, and Glenartney went \ to pass the judge two lengths ahead of Monoloff, who was a similar distance ahead of Courtlike. Becky Sharp 11 was fourth and Alloy next.

Potre Hack j The defections from the dozen carded 5 for the Petre Hack Handicap were Coolmint, Acred. Havering. Endorse q and Monoie. Backers sorted out Freehold £857, Miss Ransom £824 and g Lucky Bag £551. White Ringlet showed her usual pace from the start, f, leading Potency, Lucky Bag. Miss Ransom and Freehold. At the four 9 furlongs Lucky Bag had taken the lead n from White Ringlet, Potency, Miss - Ransom and Freehold. Across the top White Ringlet and Lucky Bag were n showing the way to Potency, Miss J ; Ransom, and Freehold, and into the ‘ straight White Ringlet, Miss Ransom, Freehold and Monsogne was Hiv order. < Over the final stages Miss Ransom momentarily held the lead, until Free- "* hold and Warflame challenged. Free' hold wore her down and was a neck in front when the judge was reached- i Warflame being half a head in front of i Miss Ransom. Lucky Bag, Potency. White Ringlet and Monsogne was the order of the others. Flying Handicap Tliere was a big pool on the Flying Handicap. Lady Quex £1,216 and Lysander £855 carried the money, the outsider of the six being The Raider £474. was the early leader, being followed by The Raider, Lady Quex, Vast Acre and Gold Lawn, but running to the half-mile Lady Quex had taken the role of pilot, with The Raider next, and Cimabue, Vast Acre and Gold Lawn the order of the others, Lysander still being last. The Raider and Lady Quex were three lengths clear across the top, where Cimabue. I Vast Acre and Gold Lawn followed. Tho Raider was well clear of Lady Quex as they turned into the straight, and Cimabue and Vast- Acre were > the nearest of the others.
