HERNE BAY ACCESS
HARBOUR ST. EXTENSION NO DECISION YET The question of linking up Harbour ‘ and Fanshawe Streets, thus giving ; Herne Bay area direct access to the ‘ city without the necessity of using j College Hill was again before the City ! Council last evening and was again ; referred back to the committee, j The Town Planning Committee recommended that the scheme be apI proved and that negotiations be ! opened with the Auckland Gas Comj Pany. The company owns the land between i the two streets, and has refused to i allow the road to be put across it ! owing to the land being wanted for extensions to its works. The council decided in the middle of 'j last year that it could not do any- . thing about the proposal, but a peti- ! tion by 1,994 residents caused the ; question to be reopened. The city engineer then reported i further, giving three alternative schemes. One was as direct a connection as possible, and would have • cost £8,400. The other two proceeded outside the gas company’s property and used the waterfront to a i greater extent, one scheme costing | £18,600 and the other £26,800. ! After due consideration the comj mittee decided on the £8,400 scheme, j a ll the schemes having about £2,606 • in the way of compensation to be j added to them. The committee reI commended the scheme to the City j Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon. moved j that the question be referred hack for i further consideration, and this was J agreed to.
