Problems for Captains
TO-MORROW’S A.C.A. CRICKET Puzzle of Uncompleted Innings WHEN it is considered that the unbeaten Hden Eleven made the smallest score in last Saturday’s A.C.A. cricket, and that that score amounted to 291 runs, it will be realised that the odds to-morrow are that each of the four teams which batted last week will not be defeated. But there is a real problem facing the captains of at least two of the teams which have wickets in hand—is it safe to declare?
is by no means feeling as x happy as it was about 5 o’clock last Saturday, when it had on nearly a couple of hundred runs for the loss of two wickets. A total of 291 is nothing like a safe score against such a potentially strong batting side as Grafton can muster, and it only wants Langridge, Allcott or Horspool to get going against rather ordinary bowling to give Jack Mills a lot of worry. On paper, however, it looks a good, sporting game to-morrow if the weather holds, and it may prove a blessing in disguise to Eden to be forced out of its usual impregnable position, which has been so productive of wearisome drawn games. Rule Garrard may have some misgivings about declaring straight-away against Y.M.C.A., seeing that the Association may call on the services of Bowley, unfit as he is. Varsity looks almost certain to gain a first innings win. Duncan and Frater have a difficult problem to decide, Frater especially so. With "Smithy” in his present rapid run-getting form and other good batsmen on hand, even 324 runs might not be beyond Ponsonby. The worst of it is that the A.C.A.’s involved scoring system does not give much reward for enterprise, because a draw would give Shore two points, and even if the Devonport men gain a first innings win, Ponsonby would still get a point —the world's champion example of how a winning team can be penalised for winning, by giving the beaten team a point! Still, if Frater decides “to give it a go" and eschew the “ca canny” methods which other teams have brought to a fine art, he will have solid support from all true lovers of sporting cricket. Parnell has a wicket in hand and 30 runs less than Shore on the slate, but Duncan’s men have not to face such a formidable proposition as Shore. Still, on the other hand, Duncan is without one of his best bowlers, Goodsir, who is nursing a motor-cycle int jury, and one never quite knows what ■ Suburbs will do.
St. James made 78 (Butler 22, Newdick 19, Short 12, L. Guiney 111. Bowling for Outcasts, Robinson took six wickets for 52, Cock, three for 12. Outcasts made 69 runs (Cock 14, Robinson 12, Joynton and Hearst 11 each). Bowling for St. James Newdick took four for 16; Robinson, four for 36. OTAGO BEATS SOUTHLAND Press Association INVERCARGILL. Thursday. The cricket match between Southland and Otago was concluded to-day. the visitors winning by an innings and 90 runs. The conditions were most unpleasant for cricket, a strong, cold wind, blowing throughout the day. Otago carried their overnight score of 265 for five wickets to 383 for nine (Monk 81, Moloney 62, Barron 24, extras 32). Lynch, with four for 61 was the most successful Southland bowler. The home side, which had scored 180 in its first innings, fared badly in the second, and was dismissed for 113 (Cherry 33, Lynch 28, Southern 11, Diack 10). Eastman took three for 19, Shepherd, two for 32; McGregor, three for 12; Maloney, two for 25.
