Theatrical Men in Auckland Are Keen Cricketers
The performance of P. C. Furley in knocking up an unbeaten century score in a mid-week cricket match this week draws attention to the fact that there are some good cricketers in Auckland who, were they able to play regularly in competition matches, would be an undoubted acquisition to city clubs. Mr. Furley himself, who is the popular manager of the Strand Theatre. pla} r ed a good deal of cricket in England before coming to New Zealand, and has been a great enthusiast for the game in Auckland, although he is unable to take part in Saturday afternoon matches.
Another member of theatrical sides is Newdick, the young fast bowler, who was selected as 12th man for an Auckland representative side a couple of years or so ago. Newdick, too. is another player whose duties will not permit him to play on Saturday. Among other players who have done well in mid-week cricket may be mentioned Les Guiney. a prominent Can-, terbury plaver of some years ago, Stoupo, of the Cable Board team, and Roskillv, of the Outcasts. Most of the Auckland theatres are keen on cricket and such well-known theatrical men as Ray Fuller and Maurice Guttridge can wield a lively bat when ■ occasion demands.
