WELLINGTON CRICKET FINANCES
The New Zealand Cricket Association lost about £SO on this year’s Town v. Country match, played at Wellington, and it is more than likely that this annual fixture will receive drastic treatment in the future. Gates at Wellington during the present season. however, have not been very good, possibly because of the uncertain weather, but also because of a
certain amount of dwindling interest. Even in club fixtures, there has been a tendency this season for a distinct drop in takings With only three more matches to go, the takings at the Basin Reserve are in the vicinity of £4O, as against £9O last year, whereas a season or two back a season's gates usually reached £l5O. At the same time. Wellington can usually get a good gate for any match that is really worth while, which is always evident in Plunket Shield matches. It has t%en suggested that the Town v. Coun. j match should be abolished, and that a North v. South Island match should be substituted, played in alternate years in each island. A match of this kind would probably prove an excellent draw and help to awaken interest in the game in those centres wnere cricket only gets a scant hearing at the present moment
